Has anyone thought of having the surgery. Everyone I talk to about it is so against it. I was talking to my best friend about this girl I saw from High school who had it done and looked great and my friend was like that is so bad that she is so young and had it done. Ya well she was never overweight so how does she know how hard it is. Some times I just feel like Im stuck and anything I do can't help me. Ive tried.

statistics show people dying from it
some bodies react very badly to such a drastic change to the system
and it really depends on your REASON for doing it
Two of my cousins had this. One of them now has gideons bar (sp). This is a result of the trauma her body went through because of the surgery. She will have this for the rest of her life. It totally changed her life for the WORST, she was near death for a year and is still very ill.
My other cousin did fine with it. I say do it as a last resort, like you are going to die if you don't. Believe me I do not know what heavy people go through because I am not overweight, I do know that my cousin almost died and she could have lost the weight without the surgery.

one of my major accounts is an obesity drug and i've done lots of research on the industry.
It's not something you want to consider
Don, please elaborate. I was at one of my client's on Tuesday and she was telling me that she had the surgery a year ago and lost 130 lbs! I would have never imagined her at 270, she's such a little petite thing. Since then, I've been considering it greatly, you know being all Shamu-ey myself and knowing my biggest accuser got it herself

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
sharon, unfortunately the research i do is proprietary and i can't really give you numbers
what i can say is that studies show that while it does help you lose weight, it puts severe truama, stress and disarray into your body. You're basically screwing with your digestion and metabolic systems
the biggest obesity risk is the amount of fat you have in your body (BMI). And surgery doesn't eliminate that. Your skin hangs, you still have the fat. The reason you lose weight is because you eat less. But for every Carnie Wilson and Randy Jackson is someone you don't hear about who either died or is having severe health complications.
Physicians are only recommending surgery for people who are on the brink of death and this is the last option.
Weight loss isn't easy, I know that -- I'm no skinny minny, but IMO, if you want something bad enough, it CAN be done. You just need to be motivated and if you find yourself cheating, it's because you're not really ready yet.
if you are trying and the weight still doesn't come off, then there may be a different problem (metabolic, thyroid) thatyour doctor can help identify.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
I wouldnt be able to go thru with it. I can diet, however, sometimes I have problems with that too. I dont know, the surgery is just too scary for me. If I really put my mind to it and get my motivation up, I could lose weight on my own. My big problem is exercise. I dont do enough of it! Now that its getting nicer out, I plan on doing a lot of walking!

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
For me .. I will not do any surgery or take any pills that are not absolutely necessary to sustain my life.
Different things effect people differently .. and I certainly don't need to worry about a doctor making a mistake .. let's not forget .. doctors are human .. and mistakes happen. And let's face it .. even if the doctor doesn't make a mistake, and the surgery goes perfectly .. what's to say recovery will????? There have been so many horror stories! And even if recovery goes well .. there is no sure bet that down the road complications will not develop.
As for my feeling on pills .. it seems like too many 'wonder drugs' have an unbelievable list of side-effects .. NO THANKS!! And that's only what we know now! Who knows in about 5-10 years .. or more .. what will be revealed about these drugs.
Sorry for the rant .. but I think too many people look for the quick fix .. and that goes for both patients & doctors .. and basically just about everything in life, in general, these days.

Even if you have the surgery, you still need to change your eating habits. I'd rather just change my eating habits and NOT go through the surgery. Besides, there are a lot of potential health problems that could occur post-surgery.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
My brother-in-law had this done not too long ago - I think he's lost about 75 pounds now, he considers it the best decision he's ever made. He was having a lot of problems medically, and his Dr. did recommend him having the surgery.

i am not overweight so i really cannot relate. however i do feel that surgery SHOULD be the last resort and should be limited to those w/ related medical conditions. i don't understand why some people just can't lose weight (medical issues excluded). sure it is hard and takes A TON of will-power and requires a lifestyle change but it CAN be done. i think more often then not, people opt of an easy out and a quick fix.

If you are seriously obese, then you physically cant work out. Your legs will not sustain you and you are at risk for heart/breathing related problems. I don't think people on these boards are looking for a quick fix.

You never hear of the bad stories just the good ones. Oprah had a show all about the down side of the procedure. It was very interesting. I know first hand people that have had it and have done great BUT I also have a client that was having it done to get healthy and died on the table. I'm not willing to take that risk. I will have to learn stricter discpline.
Edited for a second thought: Ok so you have the surgery (it was covered by insurance) and everything turns out great but because you lost the weight at such a rapid rate now you have all this hanging skin. Do you have the extra $25,000 or so it is going to cost you to have the plastic surgery to have it removed? This is also a down side to losing the weight so fast.

IMO, someone cuttting you open and rearranging your insides is not a 'quick fix' by any means.

Unfortunately, if you are at the weight where a doctor would recommend you for the surgery, you probably already have medical related problems. The issue I think is whether or not the surgery will improve your health problems or create new ones in their place. If you have never been overweight it is difficult to describe why it can be so challenging to lose and it is usually more complicated than having willpower.

that is why i mentioned (health issues excluded). i should probably keep out of this as i am not in this situation. my reference is to those on the 'heavy side' (as the thread reads) not to those who are obese and 'require' surgery.

I know someone who recently had this done ... I am told she came close to dying. She is still recuperating.

Some of the people on The Biggest Loser were what I tink would be considered seriously obese and they withstood the exercising ...

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
I think form what I've heard, ev en frpom peopel who have had it ( I saw Oprah when randy Jackson was on ) it is a risk, b/c it is surgery, so it is really only a good idea if your obesisty is to the point it could kill you. ( diabetes, high blood pressure, etc)
I think you have to be a certain size to qualify too.

that is MY point. obviously these people went through of variety of health tests prior to joining the 'biggest loser' but as shown w/ discipline, hard work, dedication and will power it is attainable.
