Has anyone thought of having the surgery. Everyone I talk to about it is so against it. I was talking to my best friend about this girl I saw from High school who had it done and looked great and my friend was like that is so bad that she is so young and had it done. Ya well she was never overweight so how does she know how hard it is. Some times I just feel like Im stuck and anything I do can't help me. Ive tried.

well it IS a personal decision
sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't
after some of the research i have done, it's too big of a gamble to make
but why? just wondering.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
Kristin, do you exercise? I have read a lot of things that say even if you are overweight, if you exercise, it has so many positive effects on your health. I lost about 35 pounds on WW - it took me about 2 years (I took the local) and I am frustrated b/c I gained after the wedding. I have about another 30 to go and I totally understand your frustration, but I just wouldn't tell someone to do it. JMO
ETA: I also know a family friend who had it done and has had a terrible recovery - she has been ill ever since the surgery and now I think she regrets it.

My aunts Husband Frank had it done but he is sick all of the time now. but on the other hand Dh's Aunt had the surgery and she is doing great she looks soo good! i guess it depends on the person and how their body will take it.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
also wanted to add that my friend who had it 4 yrs ago, still goes to support groups twice a week. Either OEA, or one for the surgery. It is a serious surgery, and recovery does not end quickly, you have to get your head in the right place.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
statistics show people dying from it
some bodies react very badly to such a drastic change to the system
and it really depends on your REASON for doing it

. She is more confident, eats healthy now and go to the gym everyday.
I swear---I am NOT being rude when I say this...I just am not sure I understand--> why didn't your friend do this in the first place?
Good Question! I asked her the very same thing when she told me about it for the first time. She tried all these diets and would lose weight but I guess she did not have the motivation to stick with it and would gain all the weight back plus 20 lbs. Her reasoning (what she told me anyways) is that she would lose the weight regardless if she worked out 7 days a week because her food intake was not going to be what is was before she had surgery. After she had surgery she just started up with Curves and goes 5 days a week now.
Wanted to add-my friend also goes to support groups regulary and has a website much like this one where she posts and is able to talk to people in the same situation as her

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
My Aunt and my cousin had this done about 8 years ago. They both look great and have kept the weight off. I have kicked around but I am to scared to do it. Plus my DH wont let me do it. I cant seem to lose the weight no matter what I do. I really resent slimmer people saying things about people who are on the heavy side. IMO if you have not walked in my shoes you cant tell me what I should and shouldn't be doing.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
One of my coworkers also had this done about 2 years ago. While she did drop weight, she is also sick a lot. She cant eat certain foods, she cant eat at certain times and only now has she stopped throwing up from time to time after a meal. She does look a bit better but now she is considering having a tummy tuck done among some other procedures because even though she exercises, the excess skin doesnt just disappear. So now she isnt happy about that. Although she has lost, the skin just hangs.
In my opinion, she looked healthier before. Her skin is always a funny yellow color, she has a hard time eating and to have to consider so many other surgeries still in the future just isnt worth it to me. I may be biased though because I am DEATHLY afraid of any type of surgery so I would never CHOOSE to have one done for weight loss.
It definately is a personal decision though. I just could never do it.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
A co-worker had the surgery done and she said that it was the best thing she did for herself. She did have some complications afterwards, but she is ok now.
I think there is a certain weight that you have to be in order to qualify for the surgery and than your insurance will cover it. I actually know someone who was eatting more so that they could get to that specific weight.

I am also plus size and would never have the surgery. I knew someone who died from it. I also know two people that loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Kristin definitely check out Weight Watchers. I have been on for a few months and have lost 20 pounds. Eating healthier and working out is the way to go. For me eating only good carbs like veggies and whole wheat stuff and staying away from bad carbs is really working. Where do you live? I am in Nassau if you wanted to come to the one I go to.

I read Carnie Wilson's book about it. That might give you some better ideas of someone's personal experience with it. She is not a fantastic writer, but you get the general idea. She spends a lot of time talking about why she did the surgery, but does describe what they do and what she experienced with it.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
Someone on my online journal site had this surgery. She lost a lot of weight and looks fabulous. But there was also a lot of work involved after the surgery- she had to make very careful food choices and begin an exercise program.
I think you have to research it A LOT and get opinions from multiple doctors, to see if you are a good candidate for it. Ultimately, it's about lifestyle change, with or without surgery. But I definitely get the idea of getting a jump start via surgery.
Have you been to a nutritionist? That might be something that insurance covers.

Re: Girls who are on the heavy side.
My mother worked w/ a guy who had the surgery and he got constipated afterwards, he went to the hospital, thinking they solved the constipation, and he ended up dying from it (the 'C').
