Giving your RH the final head count...

My FSIL is telling me I should tell them less than what the actual # is, in case people dont' show, etc. Are you girls doing this? How many less should I tell them?

I know... I haven't decided if I am going to do this yet. I know FSIL did it for her wedding and it worked out b/c I guess a lot didn't show up so they didn't have to pay for them, but still. But, if you tell them the real count and then people don't come, does the hall still make you pay for them? I dunno how closely they keep a watch on this type of thing...

We gave our final count and final payment 2 weeks before. If you give less and everyone shows, what happens?

I gave 2 less
Turns out i actually had 2 people not show up...they were peoples dates that didnt end up showing.

So we didnt loose out, my DOC had the real seating chart and during cocktail hour she fixed the tables.

i did not do that; i wouldn't want anyone to show up and not have a place setting.

i had someone back out two days before and i asked two of my friends to come and they did because I had already paid the RH. I think no shows the day of are beyond our control, but i didn't have anyone not show up that day.

a word of advice... DO NOT pay for everyone that you think is coming!! JMO because my next door neighbors just got married last sunday and she was raving to me that she paid for everyone and three families had last minute things and didnt show up... she got NO MONEY BACK, ended up paying for 12 heads that were never there!!... if you pay for less and then all show up all that happens is the day of you ask one of the groomsmen to carry the $$ and pay them on the spot. This is just my opinion and what I will personally be doing.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Its not my side I am so worried about, but my FMIL invited all these cousins she never sees. Most are replying 'no' but 1 replied yes! She was like, 'Oh Marisa I hope they actually show up b/c I have a feeling they won't.' CHARMING!!

We did that for our engagement party, and actually everyone showed, but I think it's good to play it safe cause they do say some people have something come up last minute and now you're stuck paying for them. I think we did like 4 less and nothing happens if they all show, you just have to pay for the 4 who show, which you would have paid for anyway.

That's sort of what I was thinking... that you could just pay that night for any who show up. Okay thanks! I will see what we decide!

Thing is..if you give your seating chart/escort cards- they might be able to figure out the right number and you'll have to pay anyway. I've heard this was an issue with someone else on here...

we forgot to count ourselves when we gave the count. then 2 people dropped out the day after we gave our count. then 2 people didn't show up. i would give a count of 2 or so less. i am so glad that fh didn't count ourselves.

eta: i was a swan club bride.

Re: Giving your RH the final head count...

hi! we gave the SC our actual count--we didn't have to pay them until about 5 days before the wedding so we knew who would be there and who would not. ends up our ringbearer and his mother left before the reception so we lost money on their plates, but in the big scheme of things it wasn't much $ so we didn't think twice about it. i would say to pay in full unless you are really unsure about people. hth!

I've never heard about messing around with the final count number. I wouldn't do that...just not something I would do though.

personally i would never tell them less....i would rather tell them the correct number and when all is said and done figure it out....that would mean if all show up, some do not have seats....i personally would not take that chance

Re: Giving your RH the final head count...

Let me just say that I thought the EXACT same thing, my family and friends would never do that. Well, let me tell you that we had EIGHT adults back out within 4 days of the wedding. And they came from all areas (my friends, my parents' friends, my family, DH's family, and DH's parents' friends). Basically if you do it you'd have to pay in cash the day of. You should talk to your banquet manager and see what they say--ours actually told us to do it if we thought it might be an issue, but we really didn't think it was going to be! We ended up getting 6 additional kids to come, but let me tell you that 6 kids does not equal 8 adults!

it was immensely frustrating, and I NEVER thought it would happen! Things happen though...

ETA: I'm not talking about people just not showing up day of, I'm talking about people during the last week cancelling who said they would be there. That way you can notify your BM of the changes before the wedding starts. Day-of, whatever it is, it is.
