Glen Head?

Glen Head?

How is this area? Is it a long commute to the city? My in-laws have a friend who is selling his two-family house there, and he said he would sell it for 625-630k to us. I still have to see the house, but I heard it has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths on each floor and a good sized yard. Any helpful info you can give me on the area?

My Aunt Lives there - they love it. And we wanted to move there too but the houses in this area & Sea Cliff were extremely old and not updates in our price range. In your price range you'll be able to find something nice even if you don't go with that house - the school district is North Shore and that's a very good one too- a lot of rich people live in that area...Natalie Portman lives in Sea Cliff.

very nice area - I don't live there, but a friend of mine did several years ago... it's a nice, quiet, safe area. It's a little out of the way (very North shore), but commuting to the city shouldn't be a problem once you make it to 25A or another main road. Tons of stores nearby, very convenient, and great schools.

Hope I helped a little bit!

(p.s. - I also remember a LOT of Glen's = there's Glen Ave, Glen Rd, Glen's Rd, Glen St., well you get it. It made me laugh every time!!!)

We checked out the houses there. But the commute was too long (over an hour) for DH who works in the city. The train is part of the Oyster Bay line which is really slow and runs relatively infrequently.

If you commute regularly, just be careful. While it's close to the city as far as east/west goes, it's up there and takes some time to get anywhere closer to the 'beaten track'. When I was younger I lived (and later worked also) in Bayville, Glen Head and Oyster Bay - and in hindsight, I wouldn't have been able to bear the commute. As am470 said, the LIRR isn't the best option to the area since it's crazy slow and runs on a modified schedule.

However, if you find that you can bear the commute - it's a great area with a TON of charm. Good luck!

Just to clarify, we're not able to afford a house for over 500k ourselves. This is just because it's a two-family, and we would be splitting it with my sister and brother-in-law. I mean, obviously if the house is really nice, getting it for 625k would be a big bargain.

The commute doesn't sound too good though

Is it possible to drive to another station for a quicker commute?

I think the Manhasset/Port Washington line is quicker - but the Glen Cove Road/Northern Boulevard drive can be really congested during commuting hours, so what should be a quick 10 minute drive might take you closer to 25 minutes. I haven't done that line before - anyone else out there with personal experience?

I was going to say how far a drive is New Hyde Park? That train ride is only 35 mins.

Only problem is that from Glen Head to NHP at rush hour could take anywhere from 35 minutes to an hour - just because those north shore roads get really congested.

Maybe create an LIRR post on NWR where you'll get info from a lot of commuters?

I did that. Thanks. This is just causing a big fight with my husband because he expects me to be happy with any commute which is unfair.

I looked at the Manhasset line. That one definitely looks more appealing. Especially because it has a 5:45 departing train from Penn in the evening, and I get out of work at 5:30 so I could probably make that one.
