So I stepped outside for lunch today, and noticed for the first time there was a chill in the air. It felt like snow. Then I get back into the office, sit at my desk that overlooks a window, we're on the third floor, and I look down at the trees and they're budding???? One has already pink buds on it? Its so freakin warm, the damn trees lost their leaves, and are budding again, just to lose their buds again! Weird! Ive never seen that! If that ain't global warming, what is?

Re: Global Warming
Don't laugh, but I watched a rerun of Al Gore on Oprah the other day, and the statistics he was throwing out there were scary. Something like the hottest 8 years ever on record were all in the last decade...
yikes

Re: Global Warming
I guess i should watch that movie since i am the only one who doesnt believe all of that stuff
i feel like the weather just goes into cycles ( ice age etc) and humans just havent been around long enough to experience all of them. . .
I will watch the movie though - maybe it will change my mind?
Anyway, global warming has very little to do with day to day temperature and more to do with changes of one or two degrees overall
whatever the cause - i hope it stays in effect until Jan 2008 AT LEAST

Well it is more thanjust temperature change...the fact that the size of greenland is getting smaller and smaller at an alarming rate, islands are becoming completely flooded, they say in the next few years a couple of islands will be gone..This is also the reason why we have such things as katrina...The atlantic current has changed...polar ice caps are melting quicker than scientists thought and sea level has risen. So those facts are there...what causes horrible storms is when the current gets to australia it hits this spot, cant remember the name right now and it comes back again, well with the change in water temperature, current and level it causes for trouble at the circle point and that is when storms head our way.

I am definitely not too informed on the subject - but what i mean is that day to day temperature is not really caused by global warming ( yet!) - for example, it is not hot right now because of global warming . . . look at the terrible snow storms in the west!!!
all of those facts are really interesting though and i do plan to see the movie - honestly the only reason i havent is because i hate al gore so that is kind of stopping me BUT i do think that i should see it anyway!

Ok. Not to sound like a know it all, BUT I'm an environmental scientist....I have a Masters in this. And I can tell you with a large degree of certainty that Global Warming, while cyclic, is happening at an unprecedented rate right now. The amount of methane and CO2 in the atmosphere is causing the earth to heat up more than it has in 650,000 years. WHY THIS IS A PROBLEM:
Yes the weather is getting warmer, but why is this a problem.
Ok 1st there is an increased risk of disease from mosquitos and other vectors that thrive in warmer weather. ITs basically altering all the ecosystems.
2nd. Even though the oceans are getting warmer its causing the ice to melt. When the ice melts it dumps fresh water into the ocean and disturbes the natural cycle. This si the cycle that gives us a temperate climate. If that shuts down it will cause another ice age. And for everyone that thinks we won't see it in our lifetime- the last glacial maximum took 50 YEARS to advance from Northern Canada all the way to Michigan. Those were the glaciers that formed Long Island when they receeded.
3rd. More powerful storms will occur once the ocean is warmer. Basically think the worst parts of revelation. Earthquakes will occur from pressure built up, volcanoes will cause tsunamis from landslides, mudslides and of coarse- tornadoes and HURRICANES! We're due for one up here and we're sitting ducks. I worked with the NAssuau county comissioner of Emergency Mgmt to try and figure out a way to evacuate LI- its impossible. So anyone south of Sunrise is totally screwed if we have a category 3 of higher up here.
BTW I live in Long beach so a category 1 floods my whole house....yeah I'm a little nervous
OK now that I sound like an obnoxious smarty pants...if anyone has questions feel freem to ask or fm me. I do this all day LOL

Thanks for the info - you are not a know it all - its really cool you took the time to inform everyone (including me)! yes, this is a concern for me since i live in Howard Beach and we flood when it is humid out!
i guess i should just shut my yap when i dont know all the facts - i can admit that! lol it is just that whenever it is like 10 degrees above normal temperature everyone thinks it is global warming but then a month later when it is 20 degrees below normal no one thinks about it. . .
BTW - u have a cool job! lol

Re: Global Warming
It's sad because Global Warming is the reason they just added polar bears to the 'threatened species' list. The ice in the arctic is melting and the polar bears are drowning. That's just ONE species effected. Polar Bears story

Re: Global Warming
FH got it for me for Christmas- the packaging is AWESOME!!! Its all biodegradable and compostable. The plastic is pressed from corn...its really cool. I'm not a big Gore fan myself but I did think he did a really good job of putting all the info together. I wasn't too happy he flew around giving the speach in his private jet...which is probably one of the wosrt offendoers of spewing ggs all over the place but hey the message was a good one so if u can ignore it than definately worth seeing.
