We have our tasting Thursday and I'm soooooooooo excited!! So do any Royalton brides know whether we'll get to taste our cake or any of the CH passed hors d'ourves?? I'm thinking it's probably just the dinner entrees that we get to try

Re: Going for Out Tasting at the Royalton!
what did they end up doing for your tasting? we are having ours at the end of july and asked if we needed to give him any info and he was just like 'i'll tell the chef to do his thing' lol whatever that means!! i hope it's good!!

Re: Going for Out Tasting at the Royalton!
They made up one dish of each of our 3 entrees (did't include the veggie option) and they gave us wine. FH and I ended up being 45 minutes late b/c of traffic so by the time we got there, the food was cold and my parents had already started eating. So the tasting was a let down as an event - I think other halls let you try a lot more like CH stuff. BUT the food was surprisingly tasty, which is the most important part, so that was good.

that kind of stinks, but i mean at least the food was good, right?? i mean that's the important part. we're actually doing a contract that's conditional upon tasting... so we haven't picked any of our entrees or any of our food yet, because the wedding's not til almost a year from now. so i guess they're just going to pick some of their popular entrees to give us, so we can just get an idea of what their food is like in general? hopefully they will aim to impress, because if we are not satisfied we can walk away from the contract!

I went twice. The first tasting we were not impressed with the steak. The Filet was excellent but we really don't want to serve filet. The second time we went back, the steak was amazing.
Their food was great.

Re: Going for Out Tasting at the Royalton!
We signed over a year ago without any tasting so by the time our wedding got closer and I asked Gerard about the tasting, he was kinda like 'you can have one if you want one'. He definitely wasn't pushing it. Overall, I was disappointed in the experience of the tasting b/c in my head I thought it was more of an event. I figured they'd let us try some cocktail hour food or that they'd have more than one of each dish b/c we were 6 people. I was also kind of bummed that the food wasn't warmed up for us.
But yeah the food was really good, even cold. I was VERY skeptical of all the raves on here b/c I figured how good can catering hall food be but it was really surprisingly tasty. Just hope it's as good when its mass produced for 175 people at my wedding!!
ETA: I was really cranky at the tasting having rushed out of work early, sat on an LIRR train and then sat in 45 of traffic from the train stop so that probably colored my view of the experience

yeah i could imagine it would have an effect on you!! i thought that ppl always did the tasting like 3 or 4 months before the wedding, i am surprised that that part would not be emphasized, especially if they 'stand behind their food' the way they claim to. hopefully everything will be great on your big day! i can't wait to hear about it

i like filet a lot but FH says he would like to not serve it b/c it's such a typical wedding dish, which i have to say i agree, but i guess we'll see what other options they're willing to offer. my dad is a big steak eater, so i am sure he will have something to say about it! overall, i've heard mostly great things, so hopefully it will live up to its reputation!

Re: Going for Out Tasting at the Royalton!
Their mass produced food for the a wedding was really really really good.
I went to a wedding there a few weeks ago.
The hordorves were terrific. FH doesn't like any sort of vegetable.... one of his favorite hordorves was this SPINACH thing! OMG it was fabulous! But really I couldn't BELIEVE they got FH to eat spinach and not only that but LOVE it too! It was like this spinach and cheese pastry thing.. It really was good. Just thinking about it ... makes me want one!! hahahaha!
There were some hordorves we didn't try because they were seafood or something we didn't eat. FH and I are VERY picky eaters and FH is also allergic to shell fish so we have to be careful. I know they had scallops wrapped in bacon and stuffed crabs (is that what they are called??). Amongst others.
The salad.... at first I looked at it and thought I wouldn't like it. I'm a lettuce (iceburg) and tomato kinda girl. Very plain... nothing special or fancy on my salad. But I tried it ... then I ATE THE WHOLE SALAD!!! OMG it was so good. Whatever dressing was on there was really good. I feel like it was some sort of pear ..poached pear salad?? I'm not positive though.
Then for dinner... both FH and I got the steak... which was dumb because one of us should have gotten the chicken. In any case... it was filet... and it was great too!!!
The DESSERT was TO DIE FOR!!! Creme Brulee.... I HATE creme brulee.... and I FINISHED this Creme Brulee!!!! It was sooooo good. I literally tried a bite and I made a strange noise afterwards! I looked around and everyone at my table pretty much finished the entire thing!!! Like scraping their plates clean. The wedding cake was Red Velvet.... which is strangely enough going to be my wedding cake as well. Their Red Velvet cake was the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! I love Red Velvet cake... and when we booked with them back in like Feb of 2008 I asked if they could make red velvet and they said yes. After having tried it... I sooo can't wait to eat that again!!! it really was sooo good. I finished all of the cake as well. I have to say.. when I go to weddings... I make it a point to NOT finish my plates because I'm always trying to watch my calorie intake (or maybe just save some calories for alcohol?? hahahaha ) and it was hard to not finish things there! Esp that dessert.
The food was really really good! I PROMISE you it was terrific. Like I said, we are picky eaters... and if they won us over...
We have yet to go on a tasting. I'm still planning on going... my mother and some other close family members want to do a tasting... so we will have to call and book that.
I don't know why they don't push tastings. And since I've never gone to anther tasting before I don't know what to expect. I thought I heard you tried CH food and not entrees at other places... so the way it seems is that the royalton does the opposite. I'm not positive about that though... just judging from waht I've seen posted on the boards.

7/28 I can't wait! Also it will be the first time FH and my dad see the place in real life (only seen in pictures so far - b/c FH and I live OOT, and dad... well is just busy all the time!) so that will be exciting! They better like it as much as they do in my pictures...

Hey hey hey miss royalton bride!!!
I don't know yet. I'm thinking maybe in like September or August. August might be better than Sept for me. I'm sure my weekends will be full come Sept and Oct.
We still haven't done Pre Cana!!! Another thing I need to get on. I can't do it all at once... right now I'm working on some BM gifts from an etsy seller. And I just booked bagpiper and drummer. Pre Cana is next.

Re: Going for Out Tasting at the Royalton!
I know - I just signed my contract today so I am super excited that it is 'official'!... finally.
You don't want to pile too much stuff on at once - and don't forget that you will still have to actually plan your menu as well, so August sounds better than sept/oct if you think you'll be really busy then. you don't want to overwhelm yourself. it seems like they are pretty flexible, you just have to be like 'we want to do it now'. I mean we are doing it on a Tuesday, which apparently is Gerard's day off, so he was like is there anyway you can do it the next day? and I was like, No, we're only in town this one day. So they are doing it anyway... which is nice.
We aren't religious... so we're not doing Pre Cana or anything like that... that's the Catholic pre-wedding counseling thing, right?? I need to start looking for an officiant... anyone know anyone good???

We're using a retired judge, Judge William Corbett and having a secular ceremony at the Royalton. We met with Judge Corbett once so far and he was very nice and professional. He does a ton of weddings. Let me know if you want his info!
