Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

I am now bored at work so I'll post the before pics:

Keep in mind that these photos dont really portray its true crappiness. You know how photos tend to gloss over those little annoying things like the cabinet doors not closing (they are warped), the stove not being able to fit a cookie sheet inside, the fridge that makes a humming sound 24/7, a sink that doesnt work unless you jam on the handle, the brick that holds up the plumbing under the sink, the door that is so bad that you can feel a stiff wind outside, etc...

This was after Day One. It looks quite a bit different now with the new windows and sheetrock but I will wait until there are some larger improvements until I post another photo:

But seeing it like this made me a little sick. Like there was no turning back now.

I really wanted the pull out spray kind but my husband thinks those break faster. (why he thinks that, i will never know)..

Hmmm...don't know why he thinks that either The pull-out spray kind is nice to have, but certainly not a 'must have.'

I can't wait to see the finished product Stef - I'm so excited for you! And, I might add that you have FABULOUS taste in sinks. I have the 'D-shaped' sink, too!

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

I have never seen a kitchen with brick like that.. I like it...oh well its all gone now

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Dgt: Its not real brick. Its this fake brick that looks really stupid up close. Trust me, I love brick..i would have never taken it out if it wastnt really cheesy.

Claud: The sink thing was the funniest thing b/c as you may know, I have an opinion about everything. There really is nothing that I say 'i dont care, just get whatever' about. So our plumber tells us to pick out a sink and I swear to you..i can not tell the difference between the one thta is $600 and the one that is $300. As long as it was an undermount, thats all i cared about. So that decision took a long time b/c we couldnt figure out just WHAT WAS the difference.

Stef, I am sure it will look great, I can't wait to see.

The undercab lighting, are they halogens? Are they just mounted? Because I have those and some of the casings like to fall off, not sure why....

Cool Pics!! we plan on doing a 'face-lift' to our kitchen and I will take some before and after pics!!

One thing that I noticed...your contractor seems to be very neat!! I dont see all sorts of crap around!! for me that is a big thing with construction...I know its going to be messy but the work area should be cleaned up each night!!

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Im getting xenon pucks. They look like the halogen kind but are not as hot and last like 4x longer.

Yes, my contractor is quite neat. My house is a total mess b/c no matter how hard you try, the dust gets into everything. But he did put drop clothes everywhere, a bit plastic sheet so the dust was somewhat contained in the kitchen and sweeps before the day is over. He is a really nice guy. Of all the problems Ive had, he has been very cool.

Thanks everyone.

Jan: I really wanted the pull out spray kind but my husband thinks those break faster. (why he thinks that, i will never know)..so we got this one with the seperate sprayer. Its a little weird looking for me...sort of like an elephants trunk..but its growing on me :D

Stef, I have the same faucet and I love it...ya know what my DH said the same think so I didn't get the pull out kind either but I love this one and get a lot of compliaments on it....you'll love it!!

I love your granit color too!! I think it would go great with what you discribed and posted.

I have the same lights but we use them as above cabinet lights. To shadow the ceiling and we put that glitter dust in our ceiling paint so it shows that up.

I can't believe how fast that is coming along...probably not fast enough for you but it seems soooo fast!!

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Well, the update for today is that the cabinet company sucks and b/c they messed up, we are held up for another week. Im so upset!! But there is nothing i can do about it now so deep breaths.

Cooky: What do you mean by this?

I have the same lights but we use them as above cabinet lights. To shadow the ceiling and we put that glitter dust in our ceiling paint so it shows that up.

You have puck lighting in the ceiling? Or you have recessed cans? Or do you mean you have them facing upward toward the ceiling?

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Stef, we took the puck lights (you said you used them for under the cabinet) we put them over the cabinet facing the ceiling and it gives beautiful shadow lighting that you can leave on at night because it is the low voltage. We had put the glitter dust in the paint so the puck lighting shows it up and it has the tinest bit of classy twinkle. (it is very pretty)

We have high hats for the regular lighting.

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Stef you putting handles on your cabinets? We just bought the coolest ones!! I love them. They are two leafs with twine thing between them! I have to shoot a pic!

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Cooky: Im doing the same thing on one side of my kitchen (the lights facing the ceiling). My husband, the contractor and the electrican all think Im crazy b/c they have never heard of that but I think it would look cool.

Do you have a photo of what it looks like with the lights? I would love to see that b/c its all in my imagination now.

Yes, im getting handles. I know just the ones your talking about but I picked copper ones that work with our copper backsplash. I was very tempted to get the fork/knife/spoon ones b/c I love those..but I think i would get bored of the novelty kind really fast. So I went with the more plain but safe copper.

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Stef I am taking a class tonight until 10pm If I am not tired when I get back I will take a picture or try to take a picture (not sure how it will come out in the dark with the lights on) it is beautiful and your not crazy it looks great!!! He did put it on a sperate switch right?

We leave ours on like a night light and just turn it off before we go to bed.

Those handles are really nice they will look great with your copper tiles. I forgot you were get copper tiles. Actually I spray painted my handles because they didn't have Silver because my kitchen is stainless steel and they came out real nice!!!

Ok I am out the door I will try to take them later!!

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

Ok Stef, this is the best I can do with a picture I took a few but only the corner cabinets came out. We don't have our Cabinet molding on yet, my DH is doing it because I want inlaid molding so it is taking long. So it will look even better with the molding but at least your DH can get an idea. Hope it helps!

Re: Goodbye Krappy Kitchen

I love it! I dont have anywhere near the room over the cabinets you do, I just have a little bit..but I thought it would add the glow to the room. Your photo is exactly what I want.

How many lights did you put up there?

We are getting inside cab lights (for the glass ones), under cab lights and a few over cab lights so im not sure how he is arranging it but Im not really a stickler about it. Im fine with whatever since I would not leave the lights on unless Im in there or people are over, etc..

Tara: No i have not seen teh copper fridges. Although everything in copper is much more expensive than stainless so that is probably a good thing. I like stainless steel but I think the copper warms up the very industrial look so the two together are nice too.
