Got wisdom teeth taken out yesterday

For the second week in a row. Last week they took out one side, this week they took out the other side. My face friggin hurts.

What does it mean that they had to 'shave the bone', why did they have to do that?
I should have asked Dentist, but I was kinda out of it.
