Grandma update...sad news

First I wanted to thank everyone who sent all their hugs and prayers on behalf of my grandmother. Unfortunately, I don't have much new to report. She still isn't speaking much (only a few mumbles here and there) and not eating at all. The doctors at the hospital have been extremely non-receptive, when they can even be found. My mother has had the hardest time even getting someone to see my grandma, even worse of a time getting any sort of straight answers. Plus we are fairly certain they gave her a drug she was not supposed to have that made her condition worse.

In the meantime, they want to put in a feeding tube since the IV isn't enough nourishment, but my mother and aunt don't know whether to do that because, if they do, and she doesn't get better, she will be using it as life support for lord only knows how long as we do not have a proxy from her to do otherwise. Of course, if we don't agree to the feeding tube, she will likely starve.

So needless to say there is a lot of anxiety but I don't know what to do and there's not much I CAN do. I was thinking of trying to get up to NY this weekend (I live in DC) but my mom tells me not to come, there's nothing I can do. I don't know. I have a huge exam next week and don't want to fall behind on schoolwork, but this is probably more important. I am so confused. What should I do???

What hospital is your Grandma in? I say if you truly feel like you need to be there you should go. You will feel much better. Hope your Grandma gets better real soon!

I am so sorry. I hope your grandmother gets better. I know it is hard when you aren't getting the proper information from the doctors.

1st let me say how sorry i am for you and your family

2nd Could you maybe expalin the situation to your professor - maybe they will grant an extension or devise a take home exam?

Having been in your position - I would come up for Saturday or Friday night to Saturday night.

I know it's a long trip, but you'll feel better and will not have any regrets later on.

I am soooo sorry to hear that! You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you. Unfortunately I never did get to see her before she passed. I was too late. The only thing that helps a little is having been able to see her for the last time looking so happy and beautiful at our wedding this summer. It meant the world to me and Matt to have her there and be able to present her with a bouquet and special dedication, and that memory is what we will rely on now for comfort.
