Re: Greek Brides Thread

Congratulations!!! I am also going to become a Godmother... (we're Baptizing in a month) We got her cross from TriCounty on Hempstead Turnpike. If you havent heard about it it's kind of like a flea market, but they have some nice booths. On the secomd floor they have all Jewelry booths. Most of the jewelrs have stores in the diamond district. We got our Goddaughter a white gold cross with diamonds for a great price. My friend also got her Godson's cross from there. If it helps I also got her dress from one of the booths downstairs and am going to order my veil and tiara from another booth. If you have questions let me know.

Athena's and Thessaloniki have beautiful crosses also... we are just on a budget considering the wedding is fastly approaching.
Good Luck!!!

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Hi fellow Greekies,
I'm getting married in October, my FH is Italian, we are getting married in Holy Cross in Brooklyn-and going to Greece for our honeymoon!
This thread is great! My koumbara is my grandmother, who is also my nonna, so I'm getting her a necklace/bracelet /earring set from Greece.

hi girls.....i posted this on the last page, but didn't get any response. I'm trying again since I noticed this thread is active right now. Has anyone had George from Dash of Class as their DJ? I'm planning to meet him soon and wanted to get any feedback.

Hey vita930....my sister used used Nick from Dash of Class for both her e-party and her wedding. We are Italian......but Nick is Greek. He was a great DJ and such a sweetheart. I highly recommend him. If he was available for my e-party, I would have used him. (FH is Greek)

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Hi girls,
I was on this board a while ago but I had some problems with logging in and had to change my screen name. Anyway I am back and just wanted to say how helpful this thread is for me. I am English and me FH is Greek So i am learning a lot about what I am going to need for the ceremony etc from this board.
If anyone could give me some info on the band 'Something special' I would be really pleased, I have heard they play a great mix of greek and american music, and I am trying to please both my family and my FH's so please FM me if you have a contact number or any reviews on them, or know of any other bands who play a great mix. My father In law likes the really old traditional music so i am hoping we can find a happy mix for us both.
Thank you

Re: Greek Brides Thread

I am Catholic, FH is Greek. We are getting married in a Greek church but I am not converting. By doing that (not converting)I 'promise' the Greek church that my children will be raised Orthodox. I feel very strong about being Catholic and having my kids raised Catholic (FH wants them to be Orthodox). I told the Priest I cannot promise something I don't feel strong about. The Priest said it was between me and God if I want to promise to raise my children Orthodox and it is really up to me. If you convert it is a different story.

If you do raise your kids Orthodox, the Godparents must be Orthodox and can't be Catholic.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Not true. I am Catholic and FH is Greek Orthodox. I am in the process of converting and have asked our Greek priest a million questions on this stuff. We are raising our kids Greek Orthodox but you can have godparents of a different faith as long as one godparent is Greek orthodox. My FH's cousin will be the Godfather (greek) and my sister the godmother (catholic). Hope this helps.

Exactly. as long as one godparent is Greek orthodox. Usually the Godparent is the Koumbaro which MUST be Orthodox....and can't be Catholic.... Greeks only have one 'main' Godparent which must be Orthodox...no Greek-orthodox church will allow the Godparent to be non-Orthodox...

Re: Greek Brides Thread

The person who puts the oil on the child is the godparent so - so long as that person is greek orthodox then I dont think anything else matters. I dont think the church would recognize a person who is not orthodox as a godparent because when filing one of the requirements to becoming a godparent is receivign documentation from the church that you are a member in that you have no impediments to baptizing the child, meaning that the person must be themselves be of greek orthodox faith, be baptized in teh greek orthodox church and if married, be married in the greek orthodox church, and if divorced if you did not receive an ecclesiastical divorce.

The whole point of a godparent is to guide the child spiritually so that he or she is raised and instructed in the greek orthodox faith - a person that is non orthodox would not be able to fulfull this requirement.
