Greek orthodox pre cana

Original post by zoe282

Any greek brides, or girls marrying a greek guy I need some information. I just set up a time for my first pre cana class with the priest. It's different then catholic pre cana in that we only need to meet 3 times about an hour each. But i was curious what is discussed at these meetings? Anyone know?

I think it depends on the priest if you are allowed to add vows. FH and I both want that. As for the sitting i totally agree...even if it's just the bridal party. I feel bad making them stand! This is what I was told about the legth....There are parts of the ceremony that can't be chaged. Each part has it's own thing...what makes it longer is if each thing has to be said in English and Greek. I know me and my family want as little greek as possible, but there are some parts that have to be in greek, and if you want them repeated in English that adds time. I have been told it will be about an hour. I am totally nervous about standing there the whole time. I just hope my BP can sit...but who knows.

See when I originally spoke withthe priest he told me we can do an all American ceremony so no Greek speaking. That is what I requested because FH is not Greek, he told me that would be fine. I hope he remembers that and it is! I know forget about the fact that you are already nervous now add on the weight of the dress if yours is heavy and the fact that it is going to take 40 minutes! lol Ok i am starting to feel faint now...

Yes it's just with the priest. I guess it's less intense time wise, but I thought I should be prepared for what they talk about since FH is greek and I am not i didn't want to say the wrong thing..lol

I am in the same situation... I am catholic and FH is greek orthodox... i am so nervous about meeting with his priest!!!!

Me three!! I'm also Catholic marrying a GO guy. We're doing pre-cana with my priest starting next week, but his priest said we don't come in until 3 or 4 months before the wedding, and he didn't say how many sessions it would be... he just said it wasn't as lengthly as pre-cana. I'd definitely like to know how it goes though.. good luck!!!

I am actually meeting with Father Luke tonight of St. Paul's and looking forward to it.

Father Luke is a sweetheart.. all the priests at that church are! I'm Catholic but my FH is GO and we're also getting married at St. Paul's. My FH and I met him at my cousin's baby's baptism and when we went to introduce ourselves he was so so nice.

I noticed you mentioned having a reading done.. I'm having a catholic priest come in too. When in the ceremony would you have it done?

Good luck tonight!!!

I am not sure at what part, I would believe at the end because he can't participate in the ceremony itself. But I will find out more information tonight and let you know if you want to. Isn't it such a beautiful church?

I love that church. It is so amazing both inside and outside. My cousin got married there (his wife is GO), and they baptized their little ones there, so it's familiar to my family, which I like. I don't know if your FH's family has ever been there before (I noticed you mentioned he's catholic), but they will love it!

Re: Greek orthodox pre cana - UPDATED

So I met with Father Luke last night and he did mention a pre cana but it isn't like the catholic one. We do meet 3x. Our first being last night, then he emailed us a test we have to take, then we will schedule another meeting were we just talk about why we are getting married, what we love about each other I guess more just trying to get to know us and our relationship on a personal level. He was so sweet to meet with.

Wow great to know! So it's kind of like the same thing with the tests and stuff but just not as long. I think it's nice he wants to know that stuff. I know someone who the priest incorprated what they wrote about eachother into the wedding. I really like that...

I was going to ask you how it went. Did he mention anything about being able to sit or the length of the ceremony?

Yes, well he said that my bridal party can sit, he will reserve the side pews along the wall up front for them but myself and Joe have to stand as well as the best man and the MOH so that is ok with me at least the other 7 can sit. He also said that even though the best man wasn't greek he could still carry the ribbon on the stefano around the table which i didn't know was allowed i thought he had to be greek to do that. He also said that the catholic priest at the end can do teh vows if we want them and then Father Luke will pronounce us husband and wife...i am trying to think of what else he mentioned. I had a list of questions with me!

The catholic priest will do the vows. Father Luke will perform the normal ceremony and then at the end the catholic priest will do his part, blessing and the vows and then Father Luke will pronounce us husband and wife.
