I am also having a Greek Orthodox ceremony - althought - I'd be the last Greek to ask! I'll try to find out though!

It's great to know we are out there! Which church is your ceremony taking place?

Sigharitiria.... I tried for it phonetically.... LoL

Anyway, my wedding is at Holy Trinity in Hicksville... But, I wanna incorporate a Unity Candle into our ceremony, but I don't know if that's allowed.

I went into Astoria a few weeks back, and already got my stefana and keria. But I wanna light the big one!!!!!!!!!!!

hi...i just saw lnp2003's reply to my picture thread and i came over to offer assistance actually, i can't be much help with the unity candle because i am not sure if you can do it or not, but the best thing to do is to ask the church office when you go there to get your paperwork done...if you have other questions, i will be more than happy to help out since i just went through it all...just forum mail me...for now, here is a quick check list for the church because we forgot some things and had to run around at the last minute - lambades, stefana, bottle of wine for the communion, jordan almonds, money(tips) for the priest, organist and choir, wedding bands, tray for the stefana, rice/rose petals...(i think this is it, but don't take my word for it!!!) my mom did a lot of this work for me!!

Hi... my uncle is a greek orthodox priest. I will call him tonight and find out what he says. I have a feeling it is up to the individual priest, but I will post as soon as I hear from him.

Hi I am also a greek bride!! I am not sure about the unity candle. I would reccommend asking the priest. I have been to many greek weddings and I have never seen the unity candle done. I don't know if the labatha replaces the unity candle. Anyways...if you need any help let us know. Its nice to know that there are other greek brides out there so we can all help each other out!!

P.S. Where are all you girls getting married? Church and Reception.....??? Also, I am in the process of booking a band. Can you girls tell me who you've booked??

I am getting married at ST. Demetrios in Merrick
Reception at North Ritz CLub w/d 6/27/04

Re: Greek Orthodox Weddings/Brides

OK... my uncle (who is a very traditional priest) said that he wouldn't have it because it isn't part of the Greek ceremony. I guess the premise of the Greek wedding is married to each other and to God and not really just to each other (don't quote me on this). You might have luck with your individual priest at the church you are getting married in. If you don't have a real stickler you might be able to do it at the end of the ceremony. The church I got married in, St. Nicholas in Flushing, is totally by the book and they would have probably freaked out.

If it helps, I have an explanation of all the parts of the ceremony and what they stand for and mean and I printed it out as part of the programs that were handed out at the church, since my husband is Catholic and most of the guests weren't Greek. If anyone needs it I'll try and email it to you. But it'll have to wait until Saturday because it's on my parent's computer

hope this is helpful.

Hi: Like Curly 2003 said , I'm also having a Greek Orthodox ceremony. I'm Catholic but FH is GO. I'm also not sure about the unity candle, but GO churches tend be strict. But like D and J said, you should try with the individual priest.

If you need anymore help, let me know and I'll ask FH's parents. My FMIL also gave me a book called A Guide to Greek Traditions and Customs in America by Marilyn Rouvelas, which has been very helpful. It has a chapter on engagement and marriage and also explains the other Greek Customs.

BTW, we're getting married at St. Paul's Cathedral in Hempstead.

Good Luck with everyting.

I'll be getting married in Holy Trinity/Hicksville, & reception will be in Jericho Terrace/Mineola.....

Maybe we should get together as Greek brides and share secrets............

No offense to the other ladies on the board of course.......

Re: Greek Orthodox Weddings/Brides

I am not Greek but I have a question. I used to live in Astoria and would pass by a store that sold these things that looked like a candle with lace and stuff on it-it kind of looked like a skirt. What are they? Thanks- I always wanted to know.

Re: Greek Orthodox Weddings/Brides

What you saw was phonetically pronounced LAMBATHA - spelled in english of course lambada.

What they are are candles that are used in baptisms. The godparents hold them in honor of the child that is being baptized. Then the parents bring the candles (lambades) the following 2 times to church so that the child can receive communion. Hope this helps.
