Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

Original post by MrsRallis07

I'm Italian & my FH is Greek.
Are there any other Greek/Italian weddings going on? I'm curious to know some Greek or Italian traditions that maybe my FH & I aren't aware of. Any ideas?

Do Greeks really break plates? Do catering halls actually allow this to happen?
I know about the money dancing which I think is cool. Is there anything else?

What are some good traditional Italian songs?
I'm having a hard time thinking of past Italian weddings that I've been too.

BIG FAT GREEK ITALIAN WEDDING HERE!!!

I am the Greek, he is the Italian though.

#1 Jordan Almonds (aka koufeta) are a must!

#2 Greek band keeps the $ that is thrown, unless you arrange otherwise with the band

#3 I don't think the RHs will allow the plate breaking, nor have I seen it at any weddings I have gone to. This, I believe, is an older tradition.

#4 The Tarantella is a popular italian traditional dance

I had a Greek/Italian Wedding. I'm greek and DH is Italian.

Yes the koufeta has to be an odd number, my cousin explained why to me before the wedding but I already forgot.. I guess my brain was on overload then..

The money is for the Greek Band or the DJ.

We didn't break plates

We had the boubournieres on a table behind us during the reception. They were given out at the end of the night.

We didn't do any Italian music, his family isn't too into that..

haha. well, we got a long pretty well and we were kidding around.
and then we were like 'you don't mind if we break a few plates' and they were like 'noooooo, sure go ahead'
And then we said 'We are not kidding, really ' and then they said 'yeah no problem'
hahahaha. It helps that they are Greek as well.

I'm Greek and have never seen the plate breaking thing--ever---- But maybe some parts of Greece have this as a tradition? It must stem from somewhere if it is a stereotype. I can't imagine halls allowing this-- People could get hurt with glass breaking and flying everywhere

There is a drink called Soumada (an almond flavored drink) that is traditionally served after a wedding ceremony

Ummm..I'm sure there are a bunch more--but can't think of them right now

Re: Greek/Italian Weddings~Anyone??

Hi everyone! I'm a greek bride getting married in Greece, so I can't help with LI vendores ecc. but I wanted to write about another greek tradition which is the making of the bed. This takes place in the evening of the Thursday before the wedding at the couple's house. Basically, you get two unmarried girls to make the bed with new bedding bought especially for the occasion or made for you by relatives (I have a crochet thin blanket my grandma made for me). When it's done a small child is 'thrown' onto the bed so the couple will have lots of children. Then everyone throws koufeta, rice and money on the bed.

Refreshments or a meal are offered to the guests. The custom varies from place to place, some people have a big party on that day and others only have very close family and friends present. The couple obviously have to sleep at their parents house until the wedding!

that is a nice tradition! it is actually the opposite of the italian tradition!

in italian tradition ONLY married women who have had children can make your bed. Only two can make it at a time. if ANY unmarried woman or woman without children touches the bed. . .it has to be STRIPPED and made over. I am inviting my FMIL over to make the bed a few nights before the wedding - she isnt italian but luckily she loves tradition!

Really? I'd never heard of that! It makes you think about all these traditions we conserve, how can they be so different from one country to the next... (I do love our traditions though!)
At the end it doesn't matter whether the person is from that country or not, as long as they enjoy joining in the fun!

I love our traditions also. There are sooo many greek wedding trads, my parents have told me many and some weird ones. I have heard about the bed making one.
