groom cake?

I am confused at to why you have a groom cake? do you have it at the wedding or rehearsal diner? It sounds like a cute idea but can someone elaborate on it?

Re: groom cake?

It is a Southern tradition that alot of Northerners appear to be doing now. The groom's cake is traditionally a darker cake and is usually themed around the groom's hobby or interests. It is usually given out as a favor at the wedding. My groom's cake is going to be in the shape of a sneaker. My FI ran track in high school and college. My family is from down South so thats why I am having one.

good question, I was wondering the same thing!! sounds like such a cute idea, but not sure if FH would quite understand what it was if I put it in front of him!

I am just confused on how you would present it... and what would you say...

I'm trying to figure that out myself....I ordered a grooms cake in the shape of horses running around a track (my FH LOVES horse racing) and I think I want to give it to him at the RD, but I'm not sure if we're going to have enough people for it (it serves 30)...or if I should have it at the wedding instead. All I know is I am very excited about having one....

Re: groom cake?

In past weddings i have seen the grooms cake at the rehearsal dinner or wedding right next to the 'actual' cake. Traditionally the grooms cake is suppose to sliced and given to single girls so they can put in uder their pillow and dream of their future husband.

I haven't seen it formally presented, everyone usually goes to look at the wedding cake and the grooms cake is right next to it. My FH has no clue yet what he wants his to be...

I was actually just thinking about this...

I think what I'd like to do is have a cake made to look like a putting green (FH is a golf pro) with the cake topper of the bride dragging the groom. I'd present it to him at the rehersal dinner and thank him for putting up with me during this whole planning process. I've been a little nutty-

Not sure if that's what you're 'supposed' to do, but that's how I'd do it.

I was thinking of doing something similar, ie - making some sort of annoucement about it...

I had a grooms cake made for DH, I had it at the rehersal dinner, just the look on his face was enough. It was in the shape of a football jersey from his favorite team with his favorite player's name and #

It is a southern tradition and I think it's to give the groom something he can call his own since a lot of the wedding planning is done by the bride. I know our cake (which is a surprise) will be ALL CHOCOLATE....FH loves it and I'm not big on it and I'm not sure if any chocolate will make it's way into our wedding cake.

It used to be cut up and given to guests as a favor, but a lot of people do it at the RD where the # of people is less considering many bakeries charge per person.

I'm probably going to do the same thing as Finally16. I'm planning on surprising my FH at the RD with one. I figure that it might get overlooked at the wedding with everything else going on that day, and I want it to be a special thank you to him because he's really the greatest and he deals with so much! I haven't decided what I'd like it to look like, but I have plenty of time for that!
