Groom's Cake

Does everyone do one of these? What is the purpose?? I just heard of this for the first time since being on LIW.

Re: Groom's Cake

Found this online:

Groom's Cake: The groom's cake was originally a fruitcake which was placed beside the bride's cake and later cut and boxed for the guests to take home. There was a superstition that a lady who slept with a slice of the groom's cake under her pillow would dream of her future husband. Today, groom's cakes can be any type of cake; they are often chocolate cakes or cakes shaped/designed to some theme in the groom's life. It seems that today the groom's cake tradition is strongest in the Southern part of the US.

Re: Groom's Cake

I was also going to say that the roots are in Southern tradition! I'm doing one as a surprise for FH. He has no idea at all! At the beginning we decided against one because it was an unnecessary extra expense. I got our RH to do a Mets theme fondant cake for him! 2 layer, one layer of white cake, one layer of devil's food, and a peanut butter mousse in between. He's gonna freak! I say do it if you can, and want to!

Re: Groom's Cake

I may or may not get it as a surprise for FH...not sure yet.

I want to do a Yankees cake at our eparty (since he is a huge yankee fan) so I'm kind of doing a cake for him then.

Re: Groom's Cake

I was thinking about doing a guitar shaped cake (FH is a guitarist), but I feel like he'll yell at me for spending extra money. Also, we were watching Ace of Cakes and saw a full guitar done (standing up and everything) and he was like, 'that's creepy,' so I don't even know if he would appreciate it! How much do theme cakes normally cost and how do you keep it a secret from the guys?
