First things first ... after my father passed away last year, I decided that people who missed the wake (or weren't there for the family) were coming off the A-list. It hurt, but it knocked about 20 people off.
My aunts (my father's sisters), who couldn't be bothered to at least send a holiday card for the past 5+ years were never a thought on my guest list. Suddenly, at my fathers wake, they realized they were family ... but I haven't heard from them since. My mother now feels it would be proper to invite them, whether we like them or not. If we invite these 2 aunts, we have to invite their kids, giving me an extra $1300 worth of plates!
I'm trying to minimize the guest list as much as I can, and then FH goes and tells me we 'MUST' invite a few people who are parents of his friends - I can't even invite all my family! I'll be damned if I'm going to invite these people I don't even know!
Topping it all off, a coworker of mine just had his wedding the other night. I feel I can't invite people without guests, but how do I cut back at work? The people invited to his wedding should all be invited to mine as well - we are all close, and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings at work.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the long rant ... I'm having enough trouble paying for the A-list guests, and now my B-list has to grow?? I can't deal ...

Re: guest list from hell!
Sorry-
Here is how we did it:
We set a max, and split it in half. We each got that amount of guests, and that included friends of our parents
We did not invite our single friends with guests- it just kind of worked out that the single friends are all in 2 or 3 big groups of friends, and they will know tons of people- some of whom also don't have guests!
It became an issue with his parents, but once they realized that he wouldn't get rid of his friends for their friends, they just took it up with him- and it was his decision
Our max was 140...we ended up inviting 167
Oops
We also have a B list.
We did not invite family members that might cause drama

Ali - your idea is great ... that was originally our idea as well. We wanted to invite 150 tops ... now our total, including B list, is at 180. I wish I knew how that happened!

Re: guest list from hell!
Ours would have been, but we made cuts and sent them to the B list
Our B list has about 15 people on it

I wish I could do this, but I was just at my coworkers wedding where we all had guests. If I got married first, I wouldn't have reservations about it, you know?

Re: guest list from hell!
Do you really think so? I can't bring myself to invite someone and tell him to leave his new wife home, especially after I was there, with FH, do share their day ...

Re: guest list from hell!
I totally know what u're saying, the other day we went to visit FFIL and he told us we have to invite like 5 friends of him (and their fam) and I've never met them! For those people I'm inviting from work, I'm just inviting them with NO guest, it's hard to be strict on who to invite when the bride and groom are the only ones paying for the wedding

Re: guest list from hell!
We had an all put brawl with my parents about this . My mother seems to think that everyone including the Barista at Starbucks needs to be invited, because it's the 'polite thing to do'. We ended up telling her her max was 75. She has 82 with '20 OOTs' (I haven't inspected her list yet so I can't attest to the validity of this lol).
My FILs won't have a huge list, though recently FFIL mentioned some random cousin no one ever knew existed and FH had some choice words for him!
Bottom line, keep the b list. That's what were doing. Were inviting all the important people right off the bat, and leaving the b list for later.
I know how you feel though, we were hoping to invite 150 and end up w 125, now were inviting about 180 and hoping to max out at 135-140...
This part of planning just puts such a damper on the fun stuff

Re: guest list from hell!
I forgot to add this in on my post. Were one of those overly generous couples that are inviting all guests with a plus one. This may sound crazy, and believe me, I've had my share of qualms with it, Butttttt, we want everyone to have fun, we want everyone to have someone to dance with and share the night with. We don't want people sitting in their seats and not dancing bc they have no date to dance with!
I would be very upset if I ever got invited anywhere ( with the exception of a girls night out) without my FH...I wouldn't go, to be honest.
But, this being said, we also don't have the co-workers issue that many of you girls seem to be dealing with. My FH owns his own company, so the people he's inviting are all older and married, so of course were inviting their spouses. As for me, I'm in grad school and doing a pre-internship right now (they don't pay me) so I have mo one to invite from there hahaha!

Re: guest list from hell!
I think if you invite coworkers with known significant others - spouse/serious relationship - you should be ok - I wouldn't invite anyone with a +1 for the sake of it - I have a couple of people from work without +1's but they all know each other so it's ok HTH...As far as your aunts...I think you should invite them - I couldn't imagine my wedding without mine - they may surprise you.....

Re: guest list from hell!
See, I'm the same way. I wouldn't dance nearly as much alone, as opposed to dancing with FH. I have a few friends that really don't know anyone, so if I want them to enjoy the wedding, they need at least someone to enjoy it with.
PS- I'm gonna be Mrs B too!
