Had an interview this morning...
Had my interview today – it went well, but last night I was at work until 9pm working on the presentation the interviewers asked me to prepare. I got home and showed it to DH briefly and I went to bed kind of early. Well, when he came to bed, he told me he looked at my presentation and made some notes and if I wanted to, we could discuss his notes in the morning. I said fine. Well, it’s 5am and DH gets a back spasm so he’s trying to get up and stretch and he knocks over the glass of water that he always keeps on the floor next to the bed. It went all over my presentation!!!! I didn’t know he had brought the presentation into the bedroom with him!!!So, there I am at 5am trying to figure out what I’m going to do because of course all of the files are on my computer at work and I forgot to email them to myself. In the end, I remembered that I had printed out too many copies of a few of the pages. Luckily they were the ones that were really smudged ad wet. I had made 4 copies – one for me and one for each of the people interviewing me, so I just used the smudged one as my own. But, yeesh!!! I didn’t fall back to sleep until about 7am! and then I was so nervous and so stressed!!!!!!!

I KNOW!!!! (in Monica on Friends voice!) and then he tried to put it on the heater to dry out. HELLO!!!! Did you not see the PLASTIC binder and cover sheet?????
Oh, well, at least I can blame him if I don't get the job. Has absolutely nothing at all to do with my lack of interview skills!
I think it went well, considering I had terrible First Date-ish Stomach (queasy, nausea and excitement all rolled into one, but a little less on the excitement front) and interrupted sleep patterns throughout the morning. I think I came off more confident than I felt, so that's good. But don't want to jinx myself. Luckily the job is for a dance theatre/organization, which is just the about the only think I know anything about!!!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Out of professional curiousity.... what skills do you need for arts administration? Is being cute as a button enough?

Monkey, are you calling me cute as a button??
Or maybe you think YOU'RE cute as a button and wondering if you're cut out for the shark infested waters that is Arts admin??? It's not for the weak of heart!
(or stomach as this morning proved!)Actually, I do press and marketing, so for my job one needs to have basic sucking up skills as well as a decent eye for editing and images. Doesn't hurt to know how to write (which, of course, you've got down to a science). Nowadays, a little bit of web management comes into play, as well as box office data analysis, which is really a drag (the BO bit, not the web stuff - I enjoy that). Always good to have knowledge of and interest in the arts. right now I do only press - I work in a really big venue in central london - 3 theatres of differing sizes and an art gallery. I work on dance and contemporary music events.

Re: Had an interview this morning...
Let's just agree that we're BOTH cute as a button...cute as buttons....whatever the plural of the phrase is.I'm trying to find a new industry and I've been stalking the NY foundation of the arts website for months and months and all the arts admin positions seem really interesting and a nice mix of creative and analytical. Problem is I've got 3 years experience of proofreading, research and copyediting at a craptacular job and I'm a frustrated writer of 10 years so I'm not really qualified for.... anything.
*sigh*

initially I was going to use 'craptastic' but after much debating I decided on 'craptacular'. It's kickier.

Well, not sure what your salary is like now, but you can bet your bottom button that pay for anything that has to do with the arts will be...well, CRAPTACULAR!!
I think you'd have absolutely no problem doing my job, but I know how hard it is to make the jump to a new sector. I'm feeling it myself - I have more press than marketing experience, but I'd rather do marketing cause it's more creative, but once I get into an interview my lack of experience really shows.
All I know of NYSCA (is that what you're talking about) is the logo that they make us put on EVERYTHING in NY.
Have you applied for anything? I would give it a whirl, just to see how far you'd get, if you would find it interesting, or how much you would need to learn. So much of it is really just common sense. You might want to check out mediabistro.com, sometimes they have jobs on their for writers/editors for newsletters and stuff like that......

at what sort of craptacular inustry do you research & copyedit for?
I knew a wanna be actress that flip flopped between publishing & art admin job a few years back. I think art admin jobs were hard to find because art programs don't always have the budget for the staff they need.
the press part sounds interesting. I do promotion for academic books now. . .

Re: Had an interview this morning...
Yeah I'm on mediabistro all the time, and ed2010 and staffwriters and nyfa... it's ridiculous because all the jobs for writing and editing are in the city but I'd have to take a major pay cut...the jobs on the island are a little better about pay (but still abysmal) except there's only like 3 jobs on ALL OF LONG ISLAND!tourist... I do the community guides for town in the southeast and midwest. it's akin to copywriting.

Are you kidding!!! I have to research tourist spots for the Southeast! Do you know what there is to do in the Southeast? Nothing!! I mean, they still refer to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression for chrissakes! Civilization exists only NORTH of the Mason-Dixon Line!!
