had to cancel wedding

had to cancel wedding

My hands are shaking right now as I type this. I couldnt bare to put this in a post but finally got the courange to.

My FI and I realized that it is best to just put the wedding on hold, move in together and see if our arguments are stemmed from each other or from our parents. Our parents do not get along which creates struggles between us. He is a mama's boy and I have very controlling parents. We decided to move in together to see if our problems vanish. I called Jericho Terrace and sent a certified letter cancelling the hall. They will not refund my money and they say I will owe $30,500 if no one books our date, i'll have to wait the year and half to find out. If we take them to court, I will have to pay my, and their lawyer fees. If the room books for only 100 people, I will have to pay the differnce of 250 which was our min. i'm being so screwed.

I understand there is a suffolk county law, protecting us but the hall is located in nassau and I live in suffolk.. I booked the wedding only 2 months ago and its set for nov 17 2007... do you know what the particular suffolk law was called so I can research it and possibly bring my case to a lawyer. If you could reccomend a great lawyer, I would appreciate it so much.

If anyone is interested in that date- pleaseeeeee let me know ASAP! I will even include a reward if you book my date!!!

Re: had to cancel wedding

did you pay in full already??

I can see you losing just your deposit, but having to pay for a whole wedding that didnt occur that you booked for over a year in advance doesnt seem right... I would read your contract carefully, maybe they are just trying to scare you.

good luck!

I'm so very sorry to hear this!!!!!!! I hope you and your FI can work things out, it's better to work these things out now rather than later!!

I can't believe that about JT, but I wouldn't worry, someone will book that date I'm sure!!

I wish it were that simple as rereading the contract. It i all there... in fine print- clearly stated. I realize that it is 'just' a buisness to them. They do not care about anyone or their customers.

I am so sorry and I think the chances that your date will get rebooked are pretty good, keep your chin up .

Re: had to cancel wedding

it's so far away...but they have to start by telling you that you owe them since as of today (or when you cancelled) you left them with a hole that they'd previously counted on being filled. but you shouldn't owe for the whole thing...that seems a bit off. normally, you just lose your deposit...cancelled is cancelled...you can't be held liable for the whole wedding if it doesn't happen unless you like cancelled it rather close to the date.

anyway.....honestly, i hope things work out for you. i know all too well about meddling family.

Re: had to cancel wedding

Hey im so sorry to hear about having to cancel your wedding.

I just wanted to let you know the deal with canceled weddings (my brother recently canceled his).

You will NEVER have to pay the full price of the wedding (i.e 30,000) If they do not re-book the wedding the most you will lose would be the deposit.

If you think about it, if they could make you pay the 30,000 dollars without having a wedding, then what would be their incentive to re-book?

I hope this helps, and at least makes you feel a little better. Don't let them bully you around.

I hope things work out for you!

Thank you... they are being so irrational and rude on the phone. You know what really pisses me off... they even included tax and service (gratuity) fees!!!! I cant argue because it does state that in the back of the F***ing contract!

Re: had to cancel wedding

Why would you have to pay their lawyer's fees? It's a contract dispute so they can pay their own attorney's fees. However, due to the amount of $ owed, it's not a small claims matter. I'll FM you an attorney to call. In the meantime, you do have a while before your wedding so there is a good chance someone will book.

so sorry!!! unfortunately i don't know about those laws... but i hope whatever legal advice you get helps you out in the best manner. you have enough stress right now with having to cancel the wedding, than to worry about the 30k.
