Had to cancel wedding
My hands are shaking right now as I type this. I couldnt bare to put this in a post but finally got the courange to.My FI and I realized that it is best to just put the wedding on hold, move in together and see if our arguments are stemmed from each other or from our parents. Our parents do not get along which creates struggles between us. He is a mama's boy and I have very controlling parents. We decided to move in together to see if our problems vanish. I called Jericho Terrace and sent a certified letter cancelling the hall. They will not refund my money and they say I will owe $30,500 if no one books our date, i'll have to wait the year and half to find out. If we take them to court, I will have to pay my, and their lawyer fees. If the room books for only 100 people, I will have to pay the differnce of 250 which was our min. i'm being so screwed.
I understand there is a suffolk county law, protecting us but the hall is located in nassau and I live in suffolk.. I booked the wedding only 2 months ago and its set for nov 17 2007... do you know what the particular suffolk law was called so I can research it and possibly bring my case to a lawyer. If you could reccomend a great lawyer, I would appreciate it so much.
If anyone is interested in that date- pleaseeeeee let me know ASAP! I will even include a reward if you book my date!!!

I'm soooo sorry!!! I doubt that you are required to pay that amount of money; that can't be right. Good luck and let us know how you're holding up.

OMG Im so sorry you have to go through this. I think they should release some of the money and just keep your deposit. This sounds funny to me. It is still early you were getting married next year. I have lawyers friends I will do some research for ya. As a matter of fact one of my friends works for an attorney in Nassau/ Jericho Im sure she knows about this stuff. FM your info.

Re: Had to cancel wedding
My brother had booked there and then it was called off....they put almost $10,000. into paying it and it was not refunded. they did notrequire themt o pay entire amount and they said they didn't book the date so he couldn't get any money back. But they did not have to pay entire wedding!!

Re: Had to cancel wedding
If you give them more than six months notice, then by law they have to give you ALL of your money back. On one post here I read:r give them more than six months-they have to give you your $ back-I just asked my Aunt-she's a lawyer.

there's a law that states if your reception hall is in suffolk county and you cancel within six months or more of your event date that they are required (no matter what their contract says) to give you whatever money you gave them back minus $100 dollars
unfortunately nassau county doesn't have a law like this...only suffolk county does...and the hall has to be in suffolk county..it doesn't matter where you live
hope this helps and i hope you get your money back...i'm still waiting for fox hollow to give us our money back because we had cancelled with them and we're waiting for someone to hopefully rebook the date and room we were going to be in otherwise we lose all the money we had given them up to that point..but they never were going to make us pay the entire bill...that's rediculous and i would refuse to pay...i wish i had a recommendation of a lawyer for you...sorry i couldn't be more help

Well first off I hope everything works out for you guys as a couple. Second, Can they really charge you that much for the entire wedding? How many days did they give you up until to cancel the wedding if need be?

Re: Had to cancel wedding
Hey I'm really sorry to hear that. what does your K say about damages and cancellation?there is a lot of time though so I'm sure someone will take the date. But to feel more secure about it, maybe try advertising about the hall on craigslist and on this site. I saw once on craiglist someone who had cancelled her wedding but had already paid 30k, so she was offering her K to anyone for 20 or something like that.
I'm sure someone would go for that. Try the 08 board.
That would at least mitigate your loss.
I hope everything works out for you.

Re: Had to cancel wedding
With well over a year to rebook your wedding I think thats crap.........maybe talk to someone else or to Mr. Leone himself. There is no way you owe that if you get no services out of it. I can understand if it were like the week or even month before, but not well over a year.

Re: Had to cancel wedding
Jericho Terrace is a popular venue- I imagine someone will pick up your date...as far as your deposit, that is non-refundable, but forcing you to pay for a service you will not be receiving is ridiculous.Welcome New Vendors
