Re: Hand Cancel?
I brought my invites to the Bethpage post office and the girl there let me hand cancel them myself.
If they had said that they couldn't do it and wouldn't let me do it I would have left and gone to another post office!

Re: Hand Cancel?
It didnt really matter to UNTIL I saw one that wasnt hand cancelled ( b/c it was returned for a wrong address) and the ink was smuged. It looked bad. I would recommend the old bethpage office. The gentleman that helped me was awesome! I told him it matter if they were hand cancelled and left. He did it for me anyway

Hand Canceling was what I did and would recommend all brides sending out their invites. it makes a diff especially if you have calligraphy

Re: Hand Cancel?
I did, specifically because I had a very thick pocketfold invitation with a ribbon/rhinestone embellishment on them. If I was doing a flat card that had no embellishments I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Hand cancelling is when the post office clerk uses a stamp to cancel the postage instead of running it thru the machine to cancel the stamps. The postage must have have the post offices stamp or printing over it so that you cannot reuse the stamps. When they run the envelopes thru the machine the ink smears and even worse than that the machine crushes your envelopes and they don't look as nice.
ETA: the next time you get your mail, look at the printing over the stamps and the barcode thing that gets printed, this happens when they run it through the machine. If it is hand cancelled it will just have a little round USPS stamp over the postage

Thanks! So, if I tell them I want them hand canceled, will they do it definitly? Should I stay and watch them do it? Are they annoying about it?

Maybe it just depends on ur envolpe and the ink u wrote with. we used printed lables n like i said everything was A-Ok., :)

I went to Melville PO on 110 and as I was waiting on line, the guy in the back came out and told me he would do it personally and that he does them all the time. One was returned to us and I saw my sister's and he actually did it and it still looked great! Definitely recommend them!

Re: Hand Cancel?
I had them hand cancelled but that's b/c it had a ribbon on it which made it uneven and could get caught in the machine...The 2 post offices I went to also charged me extra for hand cancelling (18 or 20 cents) so I had to include that in my postage...I used 2 regular wedding stamps. If you go on the USPS website it tells you info. about it and the fees, but if you are lucky some P.O.'s won't charge that extra fee...mine just happened to.

Re: Hand Cancel?
I didn't care anymore, some of my invites were lost and would have gotten lost whether or not we hand cancelled them.
I hate the USPS and it makes sense they have such a multi billion dollar operating deficit. Completely inefficient and antiquated.
OK, putting away the soapbox.

Re: Hand Cancel?
I didn't - mine were square with a bow on it so not too many things I was worried about having it get stuck in the machine. There were no issues and everyone got their invites, including the ones that went overseas.
