our invitations are dark metalic brown - should i pay the extra 13 cents to hand cancel each one or screw it since the envelope is so dark?
right now i'm using green 63 cent wedding stamps so i'm not thrilled about adding a 13 cent stamp to each one - if they even come in that amount.
what did you do??
thanks.

Re: hand cancel or not
charge for hand-cancelling? that's impossible...it's free. in the end, it isn't really totally worth the time...they'll get folded up and banged around regardless of how the postmark gets there...You'd be shocked. But there should NOT be a charge for it...otherwise I'd have sent emails!

Re: hand cancel or not
i called 1800-ask usps yesterday and this nasty lady insisted that it cost 13 cents extra each invitation. when i told her i never heard of this extra fee she said 'trust me it's 13 cents extra.'
so i just called my local post office and the guy said it's free BUT they won't do it. he said they don't have the manpower or some bs so i said what if i do it and you watch me. he said something about having to plug in a machine? and it's against policy but he'll let me do it if i go in between 10am - 5pm. ??? i dunno if i really wanna take off work to do this. arghhhhhh....
please help.

my post office wouldn't do it either but when my FH offered to do it... they had no problem with it. And it wasn't a machine... it was a stamp.

Re: hand cancel or not
now here's the difference ( i live at the post office for work sometimes): there are things that cannot go through a machine, they cost an additional 13 cents....BUT something that CAN that you are requesting not to, they do for free...they see millions of wedding invites...not one bride has paid extra to have them hand-cancelled. i take things for DH to be postmarked (legal documents) all the time and they use the very same stamper they'll use on your invites...they never ask for more money.

Re: hand cancel or not
I did it. I had a metal chain link for the monograms but it was free. The man behind the counter was so nice. I went in the afternoon when there are very little clients.

thanks girls~!
the nasty lady must have thought i had unusual envelopes (even though i told her the weight and dimensions). so glad i checked with you girls first *whew*.
i live in brooklyn and the post office on 20th ave and 67th street said they won't do it.
BOOOOO 20th ave and 67th street post office BOOOOOO.
i really don't want to take time off work to do this SOO i guess my beautiful invitations will have to battle it out with the evil machines.

Re: hand cancel or not
I took mine to the post office and he said 'I'll make sure they get to it.' and I asked the guy 'Would you mind if I hand cancelled them myself? I am one of THOSE brides...' He laughed and handed me the stamper I have seen my moms, my step moms, my FMIL & Fh's cousin's and they weren't stamped a second time or bent (there may be some that are but those all came out great)

one of the reasons they cost 63 cents in the first place is that by being bigger, they don't fit the 'standard' machine...but they'll get sent through anyway...based on measurements, they have a piece of paper (no lie) that they judge it by and say to you 'this can't go through a machine' which is a lie.....check your mail....anything that does not have a pre-printed postage will have been 'machined' unless it's an actual package.

Re: hand cancel or not
The Massapequa PO didn't charge me. They offered to do them, but I felt bad for the poor person who had to do that boring job so I offered and they let me.
