hand cancel or not

Original post by sandelion23

our invitations are dark metalic brown - should i pay the extra 13 cents to hand cancel each one or screw it since the envelope is so dark?

right now i'm using green 63 cent wedding stamps so i'm not thrilled about adding a 13 cent stamp to each one - if they even come in that amount.

what did you do??

thanks.

Re: hand cancel or not

i went to the hicksville post office on west john st (near broadway mall). tney are open 24 hours mon-sat and they gave me no problems at all about hand canceling. it was absolutely free. i actually had to mail my invites in 2 parts, the first 1/2 they guy at the counter stamped them for me, but the second 1/2 the lady said she was a bit busy and to leave them with her and she'll stamp them later. i wasnt having any part of that, so i told her i would be more than happy to stampl them myself and she was fine with it. she handed me the little stamp and i did it myself.

for those that dont know...hand cancelling is that little red stamp that has the date on it and the post office name when you get your mail. it doesnt go thru any machines, thats why brides like it and it wont ruin invites.

If you look at your mail - there is always a mark over the stamp so that you can not use the stamp again. This is cancelling - and is done by a machine. However you can have them hand-cancelled, meaning you or someone else will manually cancel the stamps.

However, this is only one of many machines your invite will go through - they are sorted many times by various machines, so IMO its not worth it.
I did not hand cancel mine and everything was fine. Well sort of, but thats a whole different story that has nothing to so with hand cancelling.

i don't think its woth taking off work to do.... even if you hand cancel them, they still have to go through all of the other sorting machines at the distribution center to get where they need to go.... so there is still a chance something could happen to them- we didn't hand cancel, and everything came out fine...
