instead of them putting it through the machine when they send them out they use a stamp and do it themselves.
You know when you receive mail it has the squiggly red lines with the date it was sent and all that over the stamp, well thats what it looks like when its done by the machine...by hand its this round stamp
people do this to prevent them getting ruined by putting it through a machine which has happened and some thing it looks better to hand cancel them

exactly what denise said but the point of it is so that the stamp goes right across the postage stamp nice and neat instead of being random on the envelope
