My husband and I are very very interested in adopting..we have been looking on websites and every place we contact has a different price..its amazing how nothing is consistent! We found two sisters, ages 6 and 7 in Eastern Europe and just completley fell in love with them..but dont know how we could ever afford them..I hate to put a price on a child, but arent they less expensive if they are older? Does anyone know of any reputable agencies..or does anyone have any info on how to save money or finance such an expensive alternative??? Thank you soooo much!!

Re: Has Anyone adopted? How expensive is it?
Just my thoughts- First Your a great person to open your life and home the way your thinking about. I do would love to adopt a child if we could do it down the road finacially , even if we can conceive on our own. About foster care, from my own experience, my mom did it for years. The first was a girl that was 13 when we got her, and yes my mom was paid about $850 a month for her care plus two yearly clothing allowances at like $1000. She stayed with us till she moved out at 19. She had contact with her grandparents and sometimes her mom. We once had a 7 year old who was very troubled. She only stayed about 2 weeks, when she broke everything in our living room , my mother realized she could not adequaltly take care of her and she was placed elsewhere. I think with foster care thats the hardest part. You can apply though and advise them that you are interested in possiblity of adoption. They call you with cases all the time and you can turn them down, they will also look for someone for you who is young and has distant if not any contact with their parents. Its something to look into. Although its hard to say no, my mom did a few times because she was a single mom, working full time and wanted to make sure as a foster parent she was a good one.
Good luck and let us know how it all goes...

I never thought to check with our isurance company..what a great idea! thanks!
p.s About health insurance costs. I work for Empire BCBS and we pay for the mothers( in private cases) entire hospital BIRTH if the mother does not have her own insurance. Its only the birth that is covered. ( including the hospital stay of course) The child is added on to the policy after birth.

Re: Has Anyone adopted? How expensive is it?
My aunt and uncle adopted infants from colombia. When all was said and done they spent about $50,000 and over 2 months in colombia but it was well worth it because now they have twin 5 year old boys! They did not know that they were going to get twins but with the agency that they went through your name gets put on a list and when you get to the top of the list you get the next baby that is born. For them it happened to be twins!! they found out about 2 weeks before they went to colombia! They could not have been happier! FM me if you have any questions I may be able to answer for you! Good luck with everything

Re: Has Anyone adopted? How expensive is it?
I don't have any info about cost but I just wanted to say that I think you and DH are great people for wanting to do this. We plan on possibly adopting ourselves later in life when we have enough money to do it.
You know what amazes me about the whole adoption process? They make couples go through so much to get approved and couples have to go through a background check. Yet anyone can get pregnant without getting checked out at all. Doesn't that seem odd? I'm not saying it's wrong that they do background checks for wanting couples, but it just strikes me as a little ironic that there's no requirements for becoming pregnant on your own.
Ok I'm off my soap box now.

I agree with you, Jenn.
Also, why don't you consider a local adoption? I was adopted somehow through the church or something, and all fo teh arrangements were made before I was born. There are always legal fee,s but ti won't be the same expense as getting a child from another country and there are plenty of children here who need homes.
