Has anyone been to family therapy?

Has anyone been to family therapy?

I realize this is a personal question, so FM's are more than welcome. I'd like to get info about family therapy...my lovely and talented mother has many issues stemming from childhood and my siblings and I would love to help her overcome them so that she could start enjoying life. But I have no idea where or how to start and it's up to me to research. My sibs and I are willing to go to 'family' therapy so that my mom doesn't feel attacked (even though we think she needs serious one on one time with an expert)...can someone help?

This would be in GA...how do I find info?

ETA: Also, a Spanish speaking therapist would be preferred.

Thanks...

Thank you! I hope she sees it that way, she tends to think she's being attacked by her kids.

Do you know what 'Psy.D.' after someone's name is? Is that good or is LCSW better?

Psy.D - Doctor of Psychology

LCSW - Licensed Clinical Social Worker

I guess whose better depends on what kind of services your Mom needs. For instance does she need meds? Then a LCSW wouldn't be the one to prescribe them.

eta: but the LCSW could refer her to someone to have them prescribed.

LCSW- that is what I am! I am licensed to practice clinical therapy.
PsyD.- equivalent to a Ph.D but the person didn't have as much of a focus on research.

Both are able to practice therapy (however the PsyD may not be licensed) and neither can prescribe meds. The only ones who can prescribe psychiatric medications are psychiatrists and nurse practioners.

What is really boils down to is school of thought. Some will argue that only a pschologist can be a good therapist and others will only see a social worker. What I always tell my patients is that it's all about fit- some people won't mesh well with the first person they see.

Sasha,

FM!

That's what I will be. One day! If I ever finish school.
