Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
I decided not to. Basically it was my only option left - I had tried everything else. My acne isn't severe but I break out a fair share. My mom work's in a pharmacy and the owner/pharmacist had scare dher about teh side effects and my dr scared me a bit too. Esp the birth ones - I just felt the drug was too new and that I knew in the next 5 years I would want to conceive and who knows what the long term effect would be. I just deal with the pimples....and complain.
From those I know who tried it did work wonders but the acne was back withing 6 months of the treatment.
I would advise if you decide make sure you have a good dr who will monitor. The 1st dermatologist I went to see prescribed it for me - explained nothing, didn't send me for blood tests and didn't ask if I was on BCP (which I wasn't). The 2nd dermatologist used it as a last resort and wanted to monitor my blood and such very carefully and everything else the 1st one did not do. So just get a good dr.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
I was once on it years ago(over 15) for mild acne and not only did it dry/clear up my skin but my lips were so chapped that I could literally peel the skin from one corner to the other! It hurt like hell to eat things like sphagetti and sauce. I also started getting really bad back pain out of nowhere. When I stopped the accutane, no more back pain (think I was on it less than a year too) I would go for one of the better topical creams, unless you've tried them already.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
Yes. I was on it last year.. and I would do it again. I didn't have severe acne but I did break out with the occassional cyst that was pretty bad. Although I did suffer side effects- dry skin, lips and achey joings- I would do it again in a second b/c my skin is fabulous.. I have no concerns about having a healthy child either...

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
I don't have severe cystic acne, but I have plenty of annoying PERSISTENT zits. I madea list of every acne treatment I have used in the past 12 years, and he said that was about all there is, except for Accutane. I trust my dermatologist, who was recommended to me by my regular doc, who was emphatic about not even prescribing it if I had high cholesterol. (I have to do a blood test to see first). He also said I would have to come for a pregnancy test every month for the duration of the Accutane. All the side effects were explained to me at length, and he seems responsible- so i think I am going to go for it!
Thanks for listening!!!!! hug:
Forgot to add: We are definitely not trying to get pregnant in the forseeable future, and I have been on Depo Provera for 5 years. So the pregnancy thing isn't an issue.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
I did one treatment in 1998 and then a 2nd in 2000.
I had cystic acne and it made me very selfconscious. I had been to a few dermatologists, on many topicals as well as oral antibiotics. Nothing worked. Finally my new doctor sent me to a new dermatologist. She immediately told me I was a candidate for Accutane (I had been hoping she would say those words!)
I had a couple of side effects like dry face (use a gentle loofah in the shower and you'll be fine) and chapped lips (Carmex works wonders). None of the side effects were discomforting enough to prevent me from ever using the drug again. In fact, I felt Accutane was a godsend! I could walk out of the house without makeup! My skin looked beautiful! My confidence completely changed.
I don't know if you plan to conceive, but if yes, that's something you have to take into consideration.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
I agree with Jenny... I was on for over a year I also had both severe breakouts and cystic even my arms..which has left permanent scars. It worked amazingly for me! The doctor gradually weened me off and I went to once a week. Now I'm off for about 2 years You need to have you urine tested every three months to monitor the drug. some people report feeling suicidal, but I felt the best in my life. (I think it was the self confidence it gave me back that acne can take away) I'm a chapstick freak so the lips never bothered me. Otherwise my dose was low enough that I didn't have any other side effects. My Dh also took it way before I met him. He was on a stronger dose and also swears by it.
To this day my skin looks great. I get an occasional blemish..but nothing near the redness and breakouts I had before.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
It is unbelievable!! I just had a make-up trial and the people kept raving about how amazing my skin is. So I told them I was on Accutane. I did not have really bad skin-I just always had cystic acne on my chin. Nothing worked.
I was on it for five months and since the second month of it, I never had another pimple. I am not kidding. Not one pimple and I have been off of it since October 2003.
The stuff is absolutely amazing. I get compliments all of the time on my skin from people who met me after accutane. The only side effect I experienced was really dry lips. My only regret is that I waited so long to go on it.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
If I wasn't planning on getting pregnant next year, I'd try it. But the side effects w/ pregnancy scare me too much. Besides, it is also known to bring in depression and stomach problems. I already have crohn's disease so actually my derm. wasn't too keen on giving it to me.
Have you tried avoiding either dairy or all grains (well at first so you can tell if that affects your acne) to see if that may help, if you decide not to do Accutane?
I know they say food doesn't affect acne but I think that's BS. Maybe not chocolate or greasy food but I think dairy and grains/starches do affect it.
Whatever you decide, good luck

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
Accutane has been closely linked to suicide. I know that. Remember a couple of years ago when that kid flew his plane into an office building in Florida? He was on Accutane adn I remember reading something about the Accutane being a factor. I don't really know much other than that, but I personally wouldn't use something that has those scary side effects.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
Found this. Thought it might be of some help. Again, I don't know much.
Congressional Committee Finds Accutane Causes Suicide By Steve Mitchell UPI Medical Correspondent 12-12-2
WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A congressional oversight committee's two-year investigation released Wednesday has found the acne drug Accutane frequently has been associated with suicide.
The investigation also made public an internal FDA memo from 1998 recommending the drug be taken off the market due to its potential to cause birth defects.
Staffers on the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on oversight and investigations spent hundreds of hours culling internal memos, reports and e-mails obtained from the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as from Accutane's manufacturer, Roche U.S. Pharmaceuticals, part of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., of Nutley, N.J.
More than 200 people have taken their lives while taking Accutane -- and perhaps many more -- but neither the FDA nor Roche has ever publicly admitted the suicides were due to the drug.
'This investigation leads to one conclusion: In some cases ... Accutane results in severe cases of depression, suicide ideation, suicide attempts and suicide,' said Bart Stupak, R-Mich. Stupak's son, B.J., died in 2000 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while taking Accutane.
'If the FDA cannot or will not regulate Accutane, ... then it is imperative for the U.S. Congress to act to protect the American public,' Stupak said.
Committee members grilled representatives from FDA and Roche on the findings of their investigation, charging both have failed to protect the public from the known risks of Accutane. Both denied the suicide link and said a new plan instituted earlier this year will lower the incidence of birth defects.
Accutane, first approved in 1982, is intended to be used as a last resort to treat severe forms of acne that cause scarring and cysts. It often works miracles, as patients have attested, because it can clear up their skin in a matter of months. However, the drug carries serious side effects. It is known to cause birth defects and an unknown percentage of people using the drug have developed depression and committed suicide.
The FDA and Roche maintained there is no scientific proof the drug caused the depression or suicide cases -- although the labeling on the drug specifically warns of both possibilities. The FDA has confirmed 167 cases of suicide in people taking Accutane. Stupak said his office sent 37 more cases to the agency last week. He said, however, internal FDA documents suggested this was less than 1 percent of the total number of suicides by people on Accutane, indicating the real number could range from 2,000 to as high as 20,000.
Stupak also cited a 1994 FDA memo discussing a teleconference call with Roche. It said Roche concurred with the agency that there does appear to be a problem with Accutane and depression and suicide.
Roche's president and CEO George Abercrombie said he was not familiar with the memo or the teleconference call.
Accutane also is known to cause birth defects, such as ear deformities -- including a lack of an inner and outer ear -- fatal heart defects and mental retardation. The committee obtained internal memos from the CDC and FDA that said risk of birth defects is so dangerous the drug should not be allowed to be sold. A CDC official wrote in a 1998 letter to the FDA that Accutane is just as serious a cause of birth defects as the cancer and leprosy drug thalidomide, and 'we simply need to remove the drug from the market.'
Another FDA internal memo, written in 1998, said, 'Accutane poses a significant public health threat and as such should be withdrawn from the market.'
The memos notwithstanding, the FDA has attempted to put provisions in place to inform women of this risk and warn them not to become pregnant while taking the drug. Despite these efforts, and warnings to physicians to prescribe the drug only for the most serious form of acne, the investigation found 90 percent of women who received the drug suffered only mild acne and nearly half of all prescriptions went to teens with mild cases of acne.
Pressed by committee members on this, FDA's Janet Woodcock, director of the agency's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said, 'A proportion of people treated with this drug in the last decade had mild acne and should've been treated with other drugs.'
Roche's Abercrombie disagreed, saying, 'we believe the vast majority of use is' appropriate and in people who have severe acne.
The FDA has no control over how a drug is prescribed and physicians are essentially left to their own discretion to decide whether to limit a drug to the use for which it is approved.
Stupak noted although thalidomide is not used by women likely to have children, it is tightly controlled and regulated with a system that requires the physician, the pharmacist and the patient to be registered. 'Yet, Accutane is not tightly controlled like thalidomide, and Accutane is marketed to women of child-bearing years despite its horrendous record of causing birth defects,' he said.
The FDA estimated about 2,000 pregnancies per year occur in women taking Accutane. Roche disputed that number, saying only about 2,300 pregnancies have occurred, in total, since the drug first became available 20 years ago.
'Roche isn't telling the truth on that,' Stupak told United Press Interational. During the hearing, he cited a 1999 report from Roche that mentioned 93 pregnancies affected and 42 abortions in women taking the drug during only one-quarter of that year.
The FDA has worked with Roche to develop a new plan called the System to Manage Accutane Related Teratogenicity, or SMART, that began in April. This requires women to get a pregnancy test each month, receive repeat counseling about birth defects, and agree to use two forms of contraception while on Accutane. This new program will help curtail pregnancies in women on the drug and, therefore, birth defects, Woodcock said.
However, Lynn Martinez of the birth defects program at the Organization of Teratology Information Services, a national group that tracks prenatal exposures, said her organization is still getting calls from women who have become pregnant while taking Accutane even after the SMART program has gone into effect.
Many experts testifying before the subcommittee called for a mandatory registration similar to the thalidomide system. They urged that doctors, pharmacists and individuals taking the drug be required to register. This has been employed in Europe for Accutane and there are nearly no birth defects associated with the drug in that region, Stupak said.
FDA's Woodcock said such requirements would violate patient confidentiality and, by making the drug harder to get, would only create a black market. Pressed on this by the subcommittee, she admitted there was no evidence tighter restrictions would lead to a black market.
The investigation also found Accutane is being purchased in Mexico and brought illegally into the United States, and it is available on approximately 40 Internet Web sites, where individuals can order it without a prescription or being informed of the risks, Stupak said.
Roche could help crack down on these illegally sold products simply by purchasing some of them and using the tracking codes on packaging to determine where they originated, Stupak told UPI. He noted Pfizer did something similar with its drug Viagra to curtail illicit sales.
Roche relies on regulatory and law enforcement agencies to control the illegal sales of Accutane, Abercrombie said. 'As soon as we are made aware of illegal distribution, ... we immediately turn that information over to the appropriate authorities,' he said.
The committee also faulted Roche for its ads targeting consumers, given the serious consequences that can result from the drug and the assumption by the medical community that patients should be strictly warned of the side effects.
Although the ads do not mention Accutane specifically, the purpose of the ads was to make consumers aware there were treatments for severe acne, Abercrombie said.
'What you just said is not a truthful statement,' said Peter Deutsch, D-Fla. He held up a Roche ad depicting a teenage male who did not appear to have acne. 'You're beyond the straight-face test, I'm sorry,' he added.
If FDA fails to regulate Accutane adequately, Congress could pass legislation regulating Internet sales of pharmaceuticals, requiring the FDA to more closely monitor people taking this drug and requiring the FDA to do a better job of controlling illegal importation of drugs, Stupak told UPI.
In response to the committee's investigation, the FDA announced this week that it was placing importation restrictions on Accutane and warned consumers not to buy it over the Internet.
To add to the list of problems associated with Accutane, the FDA recently made the decision to include the risk of violent and aggressive behavior on the list of warnings on labeling.
I am not on it but my brother and his friend both are and the results are amazing. They are both 16 and had normal teenage acne, nothing serious. Well my brothers friend went on accutane and although it cleared up his skin he became suicidal and had really chapped lips. My brother on the other hand had tried a few other things including proactive and other prescriptive medications and nothing worked. He has been on accutane for 3 months and not only has his skin cleared up but luckily he hasnt had any side effects from it.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
Actually, it was not linked to the FLA plane suicide in the end -- the final report on the teen in FLA was that he did not have any Accutane in his system; in fact, they found the unfilled prescription after his death. That part (less sexy for headlines) did not make the front page though.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
Honestly, it totally pisses me off how people have been so misinformed about Accutane. The link to suicide and depression have been found to be really weak. In addition, you just don't get depressed over night. If someone on Accutane starts to feel depressed, they should stop taking it. I asked my derm about it. She said in all of the years, she had one patient who felt like she was becoming depressed. The derm said that she had been depressed before so it was not necessarily the Accutane.

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
My brother was on it years ago. It cleared his skin up completely but his face did get VERY RED and he had really bad chap lips. Today he has TERRIBLE stomach problems. I don't know if it has anything to do with the Accutane but it seems to coincidental. As for the suicide situation I don't know much about that but having skin problems myself (and I am not saying I have ever been suicidal from it) but I can understand how depressed acne can make a person. then put them on Accutane and they become red and chapped it can make you even more depressed. I never went on Accutane because of the fear of birth defects and how my brothers stomach is today. I had plenty of Drs tell me it was my only option since they had already put me on every topical and antibiotic under the sun! Actually being pregnant has cleared up my skin tremendously! Good luck in whatever you decide!

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
i was on accutane when i was 16 and it is an absolute miracle drug! As for the its link to suicide.....acne makes you depressed!! Not only that but a majority of the people that are on it are hormonal teens! Hormonal teens + severe acne = depression! Also, my derm told me it is absolutely out of your system 6mths after using if you are concerned about a healthy pregnancy/baby. the amazing results definately out weigh the dried skin and lips! good luck!

Not for nothing, but if something is even remotely linked to suicide, or any other effects, and you are thinking of putting it in your body, don't you want to know that? I know I sure as hell would like to be as informed as possible. I guess I'm in the minority?

Re: Has anyone ever been on Accutane?
I think to become suicidal you need to have a predisposition to depression and suicidal thoughts.. it's not like you start taking accutane and within a month try to kill yourself- that's just not how it happens. If you have very very severe cystic acne, the chances are you're going to have depression b/c that type of acne is awful- very painful (I'm not talking about a zit or cyst here or there).
I didn't have any symptoms of depression- but I wasn't depressed before the Accutane.
I did have, however, joint pain during my 5th and 6th month as the medicine dries out not only your oil glands but the lubricants between your joints.
My hair texture hasn't been the same since then either. But I would do it again in a heartbeat and wish my first dermatologist would have brought it up b/c now I have a lot of scars on my face from her failed treatments- peels, retin-a, etc which being on accutane could have eliminated.
