Has anyone ever got a Speeding Ticket...I have a question(s)???

I was heading upstate a few weeks ago and on my way home I got pulled over by a state trooper on RT-17. I was doing 88 in a 65 .

I've never gotten a speeding ticket before so I was going to do the court appearance thing but the the Court place is 3 hours away . I tried calling to find out how much the ticket would be and how many points on my license but they said I have to just please guilty or not guilty then they will tell me what the fine and points are. The fine doesn't bother me that much but does anyone know how many points that is on your license??? It might be worth a 3 hour trip upstate Does anyone wanna go on a roadtrip

Roughly this is the point system for tickets

Six Points
* Manslaughter, negligent homicide, or another felony involving the use of a motor vehicle
* Operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs
* Failing to stop and give identification at the scene of an accident
* Reckless driving
* Unlawful blood-alcohol content (BAC) level
* Refusal to take a chemical test
* Fleeing or eluding a police officer

Four Points
* Drag racing
* Impaired driving
* Any blood-alcohol level in a driver under twenty-one years of age
* Sixteen miles per hour or more over the legal speed limit
* Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle

Three Points
* Careless driving
* Disobeying a traffic signal or stop sign or improper passing
* Eleven to fifteen miles per hour over the legal speed limit
* Failure to stop at a railroad crossing
* Failure to stop for a school bus or disobeying a school crossing guard

Two Points

* Ten miles per hour or less over the legal speed limit
* All other moving violations of traffic laws
* Refusal of breath test for alcohol content by a driver under twenty-one years of age

It doesn't tell you on the back of the ticket how much it costs? If not, try going online to the website you find on the ticket and it should let you know both cost and points. I find it quite weird that they wouldn't tell u over the phone, I always did when people called, but I was working in NJ so it might be different.

Although, 23 mph might be like 3-4 points I think, so it might be worth it to head of there to just down grade it.

I also found this..

'Q: Will my insurance rates go up if I get a speeding ticket?

A: A speeding conviction or other moving violation will be reported on your New York State driving record. If you are insured in New York, some violations can affect your insurance. Under Insurance Law § 2335, speeds of 15 mph or less over the limit (i.e. 80 in a 65) should not affect your rates. Also, having one 'other' moving violation should not affect your rates. However, this law is written in a confusing manner, and insurance companies may not all follow the law. It is safer to keep your record as clean as possible. The best way to keep your rates down is to get a good lawyer to negotiate to get you a reduction.
Note that the status of Insurance Law §2335 is up in the air as of July 2008.'

I'd go......it's worth the trip because if the cop doesn't show up the first time, you would have to resched....if he doesn't show up the second time, your ticket is dismissed. The time you waste travelling ***** but it may be worth it in the end.

at that rate it would be 20+ over the speed limit & would equal 4 or more points. I would fight it if you could.

Looks like you'll get 4 points if you just pay. You can then take defensive driving and have a few taken off. Your insurance rates will prob go up.

If you go fight it, they will prob raise the fine a bit and give you less or no points. Well, thats what happened to me and one of my friends.

I'd rather pay and get less points. It's worth it, because of the insurance rates going up.

The tickets are weird up there...it's looks like 2 pieces of shiny white paper attached together with nothing on the back explaining the speeding charges etc.

i know it may be far away, but ur best bet is to go in and appear and try to fight it to like tailgating or something....
i too have been pulled over and I always appear in court, it doesnt always work, but it has sometimes!

Most ins do raise your rates. Plus you were 23 miles over the limit..so yours would most likely be affected. I'd make the trip and try to fight it.

Re: Has anyone ever got a Speeding Ticket...I have a question(s)???

also found this:

'Q: I don’t know what the fine is; how do I find out? . . . or . . . How do I answer the ticket I received?

Complete the Guilty or Not Guilty boxes on the rear or right hand side of the ticket. Mail the ticket to the court address located at the bottom. When the court receives the ticket they will notify you of the amount of your fine or the time and place of your court appearance.
determine under which court's jurisdiction you fall.

Q: There is no fine listed on the ticket. How much will it cost?

The fine you pay is set by the magistrate of the court in which the ticket is answerable based on the guidelines New York's magistrates must follow. To see the ranges of fines that can be imposed, see the Vehicle and Traffic Law Penalty Structure.'

PS. this information is from the NYS state trooper police website which I think falls under the jurisdiction you got your ticket in

I got pulled over for going 77 in a 55, in nassau county though. i went to the court date, & if you have a clean record they automatically plead you & reduce the fine. If I didnt go it would have been 6 points & the full fine $300+, but they reduced it to 3 points & i paid like $200. If you take the insurance reduction course that is a 4 point reduction so you will have zero points again....gl.

FH had this happen to him as well and it worked out the same as kslmbuggie.

It's worth the 3 hours trip..you don't wants 6 points on your license.

yep, so it is worth the trip. If u just pay the fine you will get the full 6 points, & the defensive driving wont be enough to remove all the points.

I would definitely go and plead not guilty, They will probably cut the ticket in half and will probably be 2 points. If you need a lawyer let me know

oh...also, my fine was so high because he gave me a ticket for my tints also, so your fine should be $50-$60 lower than that.
