Has anyone ever heard of putting a little menu card in with the invite so when they asap you know what they are going to order? I thought that this would cut down on food waste at the wedding. I have never gotten a card like that but that doesn't mean that it can't be done right?? Also I thought it would allow for the party to get started a lot quicker since I am having a sit down dinner and the normal way these days would be for people to sit and get their orders taken and then they have to wait for the party to start but that takes too long sometimes. I don't know I guess this is turning into a little rant haha.

I am from the south, and what I have seen in wedding invitations there is on the RSVP card there was a selection for Chicken, Beef or Fish usually. I haven't seen it with the NY selections, but you probably could
It's a relatively dying practice. I don't think many people do it anymore, but it's always an option.
With that said, considering your RSVP date is probably at least a month before the wedding, I don't particularly like the idea. How would I know a month in advance what I'm going to want to eat that night???

that's true...some people might not like that they are expected to order their food a month in advance...hmm....i guess if I did do this people would just order safe and order what they like more the chicken dish beef or fish. maybe including a small menu card so they can see the details of the meals would make people feel better about ordering so early

RH's don't need this to be done here because they already know what everyone will order. I remember the manager at my RH telling me the percentages of people ordering beef, fish, chicken etc. They have it down to a science, and order accordingly. This is what they are known for what what their business is, I defin do not think you need to ask ur guests ahead of time.

i personally dont like the idea of asking ahead of time... i think its hard to know what you will want 10 months in advance...

I received one of those for a wedding I went to in CT. In Ohio there was no selection - everyone got filet mignon! In Maryland, the waiters just randomly placed different food in front of you. VERY odd! I think you should do whatever you prefer.

that just made me think of an episode of 'the king of queens' they were going to a wedding and had to choose their dinner ahead of time, but then didn't want that dinner the night of the wedding because they had just eaten whatever it was they chose.
when i was at a wedding in PA, everyone got the same dinner - there was no choice - it was chicken covered in cranberries. I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and I was asked to select to a dinner ahead of time....i'm a picky eater, so i really only eat chicken, so that wasn't an issue for me, but FH wasn't happy about picking in advance because they offered fish, but weren't specific about the kind of fish it was.
it's your wedding, you can do whatever you want.

Re: has anyone ever heard of this?
I've received invitations like that. It's really no big deal - it just gives the caterer the heads up of approximately how many chicken, beef, etc., meals to prepare.
No one is going to hold you to to the choice you made. I'm sure at some point, I've checked off 'chicken' and gotten to the wedding when they asked what I wanted, I must have replied 'fish.' No biggie. It's a common practice in a lot of places.

I am from here, and I went to a wedding a few years ago that the bride and groom were from LI but for some completely inexplicable reason they got married in Vermont - and they did this as well. But they didn't tell you how each dish would be prepared - just chicken, beef, fish. I don't eat beef or fish so for me it wasn't an issue, but I'd imagine depending on the way a dish was fixed, that would change people's choices.

I have never seen that done and if I received an invite like that I would think it was a little strange. I can't make up my mind at dinner, let alone months before!

My cousin did that, but she had less than 100 people and it was in Newport RI, and they do weddings differently in other states...

i personally don't like the idea because i never know what i am going to feel like eating. i also don't like it because FH is a very picky eater so he needs to know what else is on the plate.

I have gotten these many times. I think it depends on your RH.

No but I know some venues that we looked at said that the meals need to be listed on the RSVP card because it was not table side service.

Re: has anyone ever heard of this?
this is very common for weddings out of NY. I see it all the time. Many places do this unless you are having a buffet. This is because the price per person often depends on what their entree is.

Totally embarrassing, I had to choose ahead for a rehearsal dinner in MA last year, and I didn't want the steak I ahd chosen, so I switched to fish thinking it wasn't a big deal- the mother of the groom found out someone had switched and started asking who did it and asked for someone to take the extra steak instead of what they ordered. I was mortified- and totally didn't own up to being the one who switched.
