Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
I am considering taking a cruise to Alaska with my husband this summer, and was wondering if any of you had experiences to share or advice about which ship to consider...

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
I've never been but my boss and his wife went (they are around 60) and they thought it was old...so be careful...ask a travel agent.

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
Old as in the passengers? Thats fine by us, we are old married folks ourselves. Give us some good books, and a quiet balcony and we will be happy as can be.The cruise lines that I'm looking at are Celebrity, Royal Carribean, Holland America, and Norwegian. There are way too many choices!

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
My good friend & her husband went on their honeymoon there this past june. They had an awesome time-I saw pics--they looked beautiful-BUT just not something I would think for a honeymoon. I know its just for a trip for the two of you--but....for the amount it costs.....you could probably go somewhere else!the whole time it was dark & dreary and cold--they places they docked out--looked rundown & kinda blah.....the glaciers and stuff looked cool-and I think they did some whale watching but I think the others are right by saying that its an 'older' crowd.
soo...that's JMO!!

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
This isn't our honeymoon - we got married last June and went to Hawaii. Our vacation before that was Bermuda. We just want to do something a bit different then our usual sipping smoothies on a beach chair routine, and we both enjoy seeing scenary/wildlife. You are suggesting that we go somewhere else? Schedule-wise summer works best. What do you think would be better?

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
i think an alaskan cruise would be amazing...dh and i are dying to do that....i saw pics from a friend at work who went and it was truly spectalcular...another suggestion i would have is to do the greek isles in june or july...my parents are originally from there so we spent many summers traveling there - no place i have been to compares to the greek isles in the summer in terms of culture, sighseeing and beaches.....

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
dkga - You hit on my next dream vacation. We were deciding between Alaska and the Greek Isles, but decided that considering the state of the world (possibility of war
) that we might as well be conservative and do Alaska first and get to the Greek Isles another year.

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
Does anyone know the price range for those Alaskan cruises? I would love to do it, too, but I imagine it's expensive.

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
I'd love to see Alaska - haven't yet looked into it though. I didn't think it was too pricey, since it's not really a mainstream touristy thing to do (around here at least)I've been to Santorini (Greek Islands) in Sept of 97 and it was gorgeous. The timing was good too, because the summer season was over and it wasn't too crowded. I heard it gets insane there mid summer. Also, if anyone does look into Greece, just be sure to fly down to the islands. We took the boat and it was 10 hours!
However, ith the war, DH and I will stay on this side of the pond for a while!

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
We are thinking about an Alaskan Cruise this summer too. We love cruises and have Alaska on the list of trips we want to take.I have heard that it is a retiree croud but a friend of ours has about 50 people going some time this summer so I know it will be a blast. Hopefully we can join them.

Re: Has anyone gone on an Alaskan Cruise?
To address some of your price questions, for a 7 day cruise, if you are willing to take an inside cabin, I've seem prices around $1000 per person which includes all meals. Airfare depending on departure point is $450-600 per person. So, I would say a couple can go for $3000 + whatever you spend on alcohol/gambling/excursions. If you want a balcony (which I've been told is worth the expense for this trip -- so much of the site seeing is done on the boat) then you are looking at another $500 per person as a minimum. This is a very rough guide based on what I've been looking at...
