Has anyone heard of this policy at a wedding?

Original post by JoesFutureWife

The wedding i was in last night had a 'no shots policy' implemented so there were no shots. The wedding im in 2 weeks from tomorrow, same thing. I've never heard of this. Anyone else ever hear of this or know why? I was assuming maybe they dont want people getting out of control but then DH said people will get drunk regardless. Im not too sure

Yes, I've heard of it. My RH asked if we wanted a no shot policy. FH and I looked at eachother and were like 'hell yea we want people to be able to have shots at our wedding!'

I don't get it. How old are all of you? I assume no one is in college any longer. You can't get through the most important day of your life without shots????

I agree. I'd like to do one with my DH and maybe some friends, but I don't really want people doing shots all day - I'll have a bunch of blubbering idiots at my wedding if that happens.

Some RH's have been implementing a 'no shot' policy for awhile. I believe all of the Lessing's properties have this policy. I could be wrong but my brother had his wedding at TP and they told him all of their properties do this. I think they feel that, not that it gets people drunk quicker per say but that people do not obviously 'nurse' a shot which they may be more likely to do with a drink so if people are doing a lot of shots it could lead to people getting drunk faster.

Drinking shots do not imply that you are in college. But when you are paying for an open bar with top shelf liquor i wouldnt want any type of drink to be held back. This is the explination i received for someone who has a pretty good idea of why this is:

'Most halls have a no shots policy....All the ones I worked at didnt allow shots either...Its because they feel they lose money on an open bar package, they feel you drink more if your doing shots and you cant short poor the customer. MANY also do it because they switch out the liquor in their bottles.. Like take an absolut bottle and put rack/crappy vodka in it to look like they are serving top shelf in order to make a bigger profit(which is illegal but done very often, its super popular to switch n serve stoli or absolut as grey goose!) ... and by having shots it is more likely they will get caught because people can tell the difference, its much easier to mask with a mixed drink. I personally think it is stupid considering you are paying all this money for an open bar, but I guess its all about the business making money, not the consumer getting what they paid for.'

If that is the reason then that's just wrong. I had people drinking all night at my wedding and no one got out of control because they respected us and wouldnt do anything to ruin our day. So no it's not college, its what you're paying for.

As everyone said no shot policy but once the cordial bar is out - you do shots because there is no stopping anyone since its self pour. I agree you don't want that option for the entire span of the wedding since it is open bar - you will be trashed in that case.

And the comment about college at shots is b/s at my wedding I had 85 year old people doing shots at the after party at 3 a.m. of wiskey. Depends on your family - my dh's side celebrates and we do shots not series of them but as a toast. I don't know any irish/italian or greek family that doesn't do a toast with shots.

i think its fun to do a round of shots - usually there is a round of shots when we are celebrating something - i dont associate doing shots as something you do in college - maybe if you were talking about doing keg stands at the wedding, but i dont see having shots at your wedding as something id associate with 'college' or 'being a kid'......the bridal party doing a shot with the bride and groom doesnt = college party to me, shots are just something people do as a group to celebrate - kind of like a more fun toast

nobody said its for us i didnt drink anything on my wedding day so not like i cared for myself. BUT other guests do like it and do it, so i think girls are asking bc they wonder if any guests will want this that it wont be available. And even those in their 30's do shots, theres many groups of friends who do shots together for events, and yes even those out of college for years. Many ppl do a shot in celebration of something.

Look at greeks, even those in their 30's, 40's, 50's and older do shots when they celebrate something, its part of tradition. So SOME ppl dont associate it with college days.

wait, isnt it the other way around. When you ask for it neat its like a shot. BC shots dont have ice. ITs like if you want jameson for example, if you want to do a shot just ask for jameson neat

Completely agree. I drank the champagne for the toast at my wedding only but we have friends who find anything to toast at a wedding with a shot yet remain responsile. Darn friends...toasting our marriage and acting like they are still in college

I have been to places where they say 'no shots' I always assumed it was the RH (which it may be for some) but I read on here that some couples request this so people dont get too drunk.

I have always seen people get around this policy though by putting the shot in a big glass lol
