Has anyone tried to make these? UPDATED WITH PIX ON PAGE 2

I found these on the Knot a while back and LOVE them for the rehearsal dinner! I want to try to make them myself, I actually have the perfect shaped and size pan, I am just a little nervous about working with the fondant. I don't know if there are any special tools or anything that I will need... I am planning to go buy the stuff to make at least one to try over my vacation in the next week but I was just curious if anyone else had done this or something similar.... Thanks!

ETA: I think AC Moore actually has a kit for the groom cake but I didn't see anything for the bride... they look simple enough... we'll see!

Re: Has anyone tried to make these?

actually i find fondant- you don't need as steady a hand

i use fondant for my gingerbread houses- it is like playdo - not to hard to work with

i would probably get the groom kit- because black is a hard color to get

for the bride- you can get white from a cake bakery or make it yourself

then just get the fine colored powder for the neck

One of the craft stores has a kit that I believe includes all three colors along with one other... I am going later with my mom so I am going to try to pick it up. I will post pix once I make them!

Re: Has anyone tried to make these?

I LOVE THAT!! I AM GOING TO TRY IT FOR THE REHERSAL DINNER MYSELF!!!!

I THINK ALL YOU DO IS ROLL OUT THE FONDANT INTO A THIN BLANET-LIKE THING AND LAY IT OVER THE CAKE.....

I WILL SEE IF I CAN DO IT AND LET YOU KNOW..

WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!!!! THANKS

Re: Has anyone tried to make these?

It usually takes a little practice to get the hang of fondant. If you have the time to make a birthday cake or other occassion cake before then, try it out. If your having trouble with it, you really don't need fondant to make that. Chocolate and Vanilla buttercream icing (or even regular storebought icing could be used) would work fine. Smooth it out with a cake knife or spatula. Dipping the knife in warm water helps gets smooth strokes across the cake. A piping bag and maybe a star tip are all you really need. You can also ice the cake smooth with regular icing and put other things on the cake you find/make that'll be just for show that you can take off right before cutting.
They're very cute! Good Luck!

Re: Has anyone tried to make these?

Okay I only bought white fondant cuz otherwise I would have had to get a second box... but I figured I should be able to get a feel for it!

Also, it wasn't a grooms kit that I had seen, but directions to make it... They suggest chocolate fondant which would be great.... but I haven't seen it anywhere!!

Anyone know where I might be able to get it? Michaels and AC Moore didn't have it...

I'm gonna start making the cake now... I will post pix when I am done!!

Luckily it didn't explore TOO much Once it's cool enough I'm going to play with the fondant and see how I do! I'm not so sure about it already- the cake broke a bit when I took it out of the pan!!
