Text from other post:
A friend of mine who was a bridesmaid in many weddings cautioned not to worry about picking a dress that will be rewearable, and to focus more on it being affordable.
She said my bridesmaids will happily wear whatever I want because it will make me happy, but it would be the exception to the rule if they ever found an occasion to wear the dress again (unless I picked a little black dress).
Have you ever reworn a bridesmaid dress? Alter a long gown to tea length, wear to a black tie event, halloween (ha!)?
When choosing your bridesmaid dresses, was re-wearability a consideration? To what extent?

I've never been a bridesmaid, but my sister has actually already used her bm dress for my wedding for something else - she wore it to her senior prom in June, and will be wearing it again for my wedding in 3 weeks. She tried on the dress as a bm dress for the wedding, decided she was in love with it and that she wanted to wear it for prom rather than getting a whole other dress. So, she wore it, took good care of it, had it cleaned, and will wear it again. I was happy to see that she got at least one other use out of it!

I have been in 4 weddings and haven't re-worn any of them - but none of them were of a material that is anything but wedding formal
I did collect the BM dresses from one wedding and used the fabric to make curtains FH turned our upstairs living room into a movie room with a projector and everything and I needed to make dark heavy curtains to block out light.
I agree not to worry about getting something the girls will wear again. If your wedding is formal the girls will expect to buy a formal gown, if it's more casual then maybe something else. Our wedding is really small (55 people) and not ultra formal - I am only have a MOH, no BMs, so I told my sister to pick something out she liked and would wear again, she found a beautiful tea-length dress at Macy's that can be worn to a formal party or going out to a nice dinner.

Um, no. I have a few and the brides really tried to make their dresses re-wearable, but I don't think they are. I don't think I ever would re-wear a BM dress because so few are re-wearable and I would never go to the trouble of altering them - they'd go to charity first. It's not worth it to me. No one I know has ever re-worn - my MOH has like 8 (+ the one I made her wear) - they're all going to charity. I think cost is far more important than the ability to re-wear so just pick something you love that's not too pricey. I'm actually surprised by how many girls on this site have re-worn - I honestly have never known anyone to do this - I've only heard of it and didn't really think it was possible.

I rewore the dress from my best friend's wedding. I know, I'm weird, but I thought it was such a lovely cut and color for me (a very pretty yellow). I wore it to my brother's wedding a few months after hers. As far as I know, however, none of the other girls have reworn the dress.
I definitely tried to pick something that had the possibility of being reworn. So I went with an A-line, black satin dress with a pearl sash. If they have another fancy occasion to go to, I'd like to think they could wear it, or possibly alter it into a 'little black dress.' But who knows...

I have one bridesmaid dress in my closet from my friend's wedding in July. It's a beautiful dress and I plan to wear it again, either for a formal function, or I will get it hemmed and wear it as a cocktail dress.

I've only wore the one i wore to my sister's wedding again.. actually have worn it a few times after... but she didn't have a bridal party.. i was the MOH so i was able to choose any gown i wanted so that is why i think. The rest i've donated I believe....i'd rather it go to someone who needs it than sit in my closet going to waste.
In choosing a gown though... I wouldn't go nuts trying to find something people will wear again. Most of the time.. you just don't have a need to wear a gown out anywhere other than a wedding... and if you aren't in it.. usually a bridesmaid type gown may seem too dressy.

I'm pretty sure I've been in 1902837192387978 weddings.. and I've never worn one of those dresses again.. I've actually thrown them all out the next day ( I should have donated them ) When I picked the dresses for my girls.. I focused on finding something really pretty.. that made them all feel comfortable and suited all of their bodies.. I got Bill Levkoff 557 in taupe/camel sash.. and I love it!!

What I was thinking to do is when I have my bachlorette party to have everyone where one of their old bridesmaid dresses.. or bring them in to share with people who may not have them
So all the girls would be dressed up and use these dresses again and then we can go see naked boys singing in the city... then dinner or some drinking all dressed up.. I was thinking of that just as an excuse to use the dresses again.
