Hawaii and Flying

Hawaii and Flying

Ok, here's my dilemna. I want to go to Hawaii, but my FH is a VERY nervous flyer. Since it is 10 hours from NY, I'm wondering how all you ladies that are going to Hawaii will handle this long amount of time in a plane.

Get him drunk!!! LOL

My FH is terrified of flying as well. I didn't really believe it until I flew to CA with him...WHOA! I wanted to land the plane myself just to get him off!!

Look into dramanine (sp?) or something like that!! Good luck!

we bought a portable DVD player and travel scrabble to keep us entertained.

There are sleeping pills and stuff like that you can get, just so he is not awake the entire time. Or bring a DVD player and some funny movies to take the attention away from it.

Most people that fly to Hawaii stop in Vegas or CA to break up the trip. You can always do that

we aren't flying straight threw we are stopping in dallas i think... that will break it up. theres movies on the plane, i am going to sleep alittle, then you'll be eating.... and hopefully...get there soon....

You know what I think I will take a flight that stops somewhere. That would be my best bet.

i agree with the 'get him drunk' idea... or knock him out with a bunch of tylenol PM or something.

either that OR fly to CA first which isn't as long, see a city or two there, and then fly to Hawaii... break it up a bit?? then he would only have to fly that one big flight coming home...

i hate flying too so i know how he feels, i am going to Hawaii, CA first, and I'm so nervous... ever since 9/11. I was never like this before!
I really don't know if I can do it.

Seriously, a Doctor might prescribe him Vallium or something like that.

I know someone who stopped in California and had fun. What about zanax???

Re: Hawaii and Flying

zanax all the way about 15 mins before you get on the plane and guess what you are already there and you slept through it all! It really wasn't that bad of a flight!! If that is a problem then stop in Cali. for a night and then get back on the plane the next day!

i'm sure we'll end up sleeping since we'll have to be at the airport that day at 5:30am or so. but i'm willing to be that FH will bring his laptop and play games. he's addicted!

take dramine, the drowsy kind. This really helps me when I fly to China, which is 20 hours of flying.

ALSO DEFINITELY GET AN EMERGENCY ROW SEAT! You will need the extra leg room.

You may not be able to book emergency row seats until you confirm your flight within 24 hours. We did this once and had to wait until we were within 24 hours. There are no children ever placed in these rows so thats good too!

We are going to hawaii next month and will be flying to LA and staying the night, then going to hawaii the next day. That will break it up. We are also bringing a DVD player...and I hear the drug thing works realy well too!

Re: Hawaii and Flying

Trust me... i know how your FH is. We are going to hawaii from JFK and i HATE TO FLY! I mean i've already had nightmares and its 8 months away! Dramamine does nothing. SLeeping pills do nothing. Alcohol does nothing! Its horrible. I can't eat, i can't sleep, and any bit of turbulence... my knuckles turn white from gripping onto the seat so hard. It's definitely a lack of control issue for me.

One time the turbulence was not the best and i started to break. I was crying and the woman next to me actually grabbed my hand and told me god would take care of me. Sweet of her and all... but i'm very anti-religion and that definitely didn't make me feel better.

I'm going to look into asking the doctor for some major drugs just in case i need them. My blood pressure can't handle it. I've flown to england so i know i can do it and i can do the time. But it's the whole not a direct flight thing that kills it for me because i hate the taking off and landing part.

But i don't let my fears stop me from doing what i want or seeing different places so don't let it stop your FH. Bring tons of stuff to help get his mind off of it and go to the doctor if necessary for an anti-anxiety pill. Good luck!

Re: Hawaii and Flying

No one was more afraid of flying more then me... BELIEVE ME... I pulled over on the side of the road when I saw planes flying over my head... I WAS A FREAK!

Then... My work send me to KOREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

14 hours to JAPAN, and then a little more then 2 to KOREA!

I DID IT! and I was fine!!!!!! I was so proud of myself... Mind you I was HYSTERICAL CRYING the entire car service ride there, HYSTERICAL CRYING the entire check in time, and HYSTERICAL CRYING until take off... My friend at work who I went with thought they were going to take us off the plane b/c I was going to make the other passengers nervous HAHAHAHAHH!

Honestly, the only reason why I did it, is because I thought I would be crazy for not taking the free opportunity to go overseas like that and see the other side of the world for free!

My advice... Take a LATE flight... Like 10 pm or later... Then you have the full day to get exhausted and sleep most of the time on the plane... DON'T CONNECT... Once you are on that plane you get used to it... If you land and then have to get on another plane.... THE NERVES GO CRAZY AGAIN, and he will get stressed all over again... Believe me after you are on that plane for like 3-4 hours... its nothing the rest of the time...

Just my opinion and advice... Good Luck in what ever you do, and have an AMAZING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Hawaii and Flying

I hate flying and just went to Hawaii in November. Our flight stopped in Houston and it really was not that bad.
I asked my doctor for a prescription and she gave me Ambien which is a sleeping pill.
It really helped.
