we did a regular economy car-- everyone and their mother drives a convertible there and it was sooo annoying lol but its not like your hiking up mountains w the car so you dont really need an suv of anything-- i would jus go with the cheapest

OHMIGOD GET THE CONVERTIBLE!!!
We had a blue mustang convertible and it was great in maui. In kauai we rented a caddy dts, bc my DH loves the feel of the car. It had a huge sunroof.
I saw a ton of jeeps and convertibles there, if that helps...

we rented the minute we got off the plan. If you have AAA (triple a) you get a discount too I heard. In order for you to get around you need a car. ESP in kauai.

Yes you def need a car-- most of the excursions on Kauai dont come to the hotel & pick you up, you have to take a taxi to their location. At 1st we didnt think we'd need a car the whole time so we made our reservation for like 4 days after we arrived but we ended up picking up the car earlier, the day after! And on Kauai the taxi was about $55 from airport to our hotel, we stayed at the Koa Kea on the south side

Re: Hawaii Girls Past and Present!!!
I actually rented a regular car and upgraded there to a convertible, we upgraded for like 10 bucks a day off of the midsize because we were on our honeymoon! It was def worth it, we had a reg car for a couple of days and the convertible was so much better.

In Maui we got a Jeep -- with the soft removable top. It was awesome to have esp when we did the Road to Hana

Re: Hawaii Girls Past and Present!!!
The first trip we did we rented a Mustang convertible on Oahu and then Jeeps (with the soft removable top) for Kauai and Maui.
For our HM, we rented seabring convertibles.
You definitely need a car.

sorry i don't remember but i know its definitely pricey but its the one thing we were sooo happy we didn't cheap out on. little tip on saving money, check with your own car insurance and see if it covers you on rental cars bc then you don't need to take their insurance which was around $30/day.
honestly, splurge and get the jeep you won't be disappointed. and its definitely the car to get if you do the road to hana.

We rented an SUV. Try priceline.com. We got a phenomenal deal using them. You dont get to pick the company you rent from...but they only offer reliable options. So worth doing it that way!
