Re: Hawaii Helecopter crashes!!
This is the first I heard of it-- can you share more details? Which island? I am planning on doing this too.
Did they say the conditions--was it very windy or something?

It was on Kauai at the Princeville airport. The news stated it was a hydraulic problem. I really wanted to go on a helicopter tour in Kauai, now I don't know. FH still wants to go though. We just have to do a ton of research on safety.

It is horrible......It was a 25th wedding anniversary present from their children, and the husband died.

My FH and I were planning on going on the helicopter ride, but we decided this morning that it might not be the best idea. I was really looking forward to it

Re: Hawaii Helecopter crashes!!
My husband and I went on two helicopter tours in Kauai and we weren't that impressed...so if you end up skipping it due to safety concerns, I don't think you're really missing that much.
(They comped us the 2nd trip b/c we were disappointed with the first one.....we were locked out of many areas on the island b/c of poor weather. The second one was much better but still didn't blow me over).
This is such horrible news about the crash, though.
I honestly did not feel unsafe when I was up in the helicopter...but it's just like anything of that category is a risk, esp with equipment failure.
Good luck to everyone!

Re: Hawaii Helecopter crashes!!
That is so horrible!
When FH and I were in Hawaii last year, we had booked a helicopter flight for our time in Kauai and it got cancelled.
Then we tried to book one on the Big Island, but they didn't have availability for the days were were there.
So I booked us a flight over Maui for one of the days we were there. We planned out our day around the heli ride, and when we arrived, they told us they had left us messages (we didn't get!!!) that they had to rebook us because they didn't have enough people for our flight!
So even though we were like, wow so many signs, we changed to a later flight and went driving to some waterfalls. Well, I fell on some loose wet rocks at one of the falls and BADLY hurt my ankle - I had to use a tall branch and my FH as crutches just to walk back out (45 minutes!!!) to the car.
We *almost* missed our heli flight and the entire time back to the helicopter pad we kept saying that signs were telling us not to go up on the helicopter. We ended up doing it anyway and REALLY enjoyed it, but thinking back I always say that we probably shouldn't have - or rather to rethink it in the future.

Re: Hawaii Helecopter crashes!!
Thats horrible...poor family!
After something like this its hard not to think twice about doing it..but I wouldn't let it stop me from doing it...I mean I am afraid of flying and everytime I hear about a plane crash it freaks me out even more..but I wouldn't give up flying because of that...I'd end up missing out on so many things. If we were going to Hawaii I'd definately do the helicopter thing, especially since who knows when we'd ever get back.
FH did a helicopter tour over the Alps and southern Germany 8where we live), and if we had the money right now I'd do it in a heart beat... no risk, no fun!
