Health Insurance Question?

Health Insurance Question?

I have a question for people that work on LI.

Do most firms pay only for the employee and nothing for spouse and children?

My DH company pays 85% for him, which is great! But NOTHING for me and our baby (yet to be born baby)....

Is that the norm on LI??? I am very curious.

I work in NYC, for a large law firm and my company pays 90% for all of us! That is the only reason I might be going back to work. (((((((

Thanks,
Denise

Re: Health Insurance Question?

Health insurance is one way companies cut back. There are just as many companies that only pay for the employee that pay for most of the family cost. I work in NYC and they pay about 85% of all costs. I have worked for companies that pay 100% for me, but nothing toward the cost of my husband. It also depends how big the company is.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

FH works in NYC and his company pays for a great deal of his and none or almost none of mine, and I don't think that will change after we're married. They just like to chap out on you. Also, the $$ for my insurance comes out POST tax

Re: Health Insurance Question?

I know full-timers at my job only get $250 towards their health insurance, because we are a very small company and get no break at all from Vytra.

They can apply that $250 to single OR family.

eta: FH's is paid in full (besides a $12 copay), but mine, once married, will be paid by us.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

Ours goes based on Salary, so if you're a Partner and making 6 figures, you pay more of a percentage of the premium.

My company pays a portion of the premium whether it's family or not.

Unfortunately, health insurance is skyrocketing and the companies can't afford to keep up. I know our premiums were negotiated to rise 33% (instead of 45%!) this year and they changed some options. Most companies are not big enough to qualify for discounts. So even though we are a 300 person firm, we are still considered small.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

I don't know what the total cost of our insurance is but it only was costs $26 a week for both of us to have medical/dental/vision coverage. Was just $14 extra to add me onto the coverage.

ETA: This is my DH's policy but he works for a very large company and belongs to a union.

For me and DH, I only pay $27 every 2 weeks and that's including dental. Our co-pay for medical is $20.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

I work for MY health insurance company. Its $68 a month for me and DH ( full medical, RX, and Vision and Dental) , its like $90 a month for family
Thats the out of my pocket cost. The cost of my contract with DH is about $475 a month, so I guess I pay little. Im not complaining..
WELL I AM actually..I work for my health insurance company, it should be FREE for me in my opinion!

Re: Health Insurance Question?

My FW's company gets free heath insurance if you make under a certain amount. I think its 40k or so.

Its also free family plan too... don't pay a dime (other than co-pays). So when I get married... i will just go on her health insurance.

My company's medical is not the worst... but its very expensive. I'll be saving close to $150 a month for SINGLE coverage.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

My insurance I had through my company was sooooooo much more $$$$$$$ and didn't include dental (that was extra $$$) or vision coverage.

It would have been almost 1/2 my paycheck every 2 weeks to have DH on my insurance

Re: Health Insurance Question?

I don't think mine's too bad. I pay about $30 or $32 per month for singel with $20 copay. Includes dental. I don't remember how much to add FH on but I think it was not too much more. But I work for LIJ-we all know how huge the health system is! FH pays nothing for health insurance and dental and has a $20 copay. I wonder how his company swings that one-it's a non-profit organization!

I feel extremely lucky-- I dont pay anything for my coverage thru dh job, neither does he or the baby. His job pays 100 % for us. I told him he is Never allowed to leave for the benefits alone!

Re: Health Insurance Question?

I'm unemployed now and it actually worked out cheaper for me to go on Cobra than for me to be insured through DH. He works for a small company, but they're looking to improve their insurance plan. Hopefully they'll do it soon because I'm paying $400 a month right now just for medical.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

Right now I pay about $40. every 2 weeks for health insurance, not including dental/eyes. FH, however, has wonderful coverage and I will be covered in full once we are married. I know that is rare, but he is in a union.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

We filed the paperwork to get me on DH's insurance as soon as we got out marriage license and it turned out they put me on effective as of the day we got our license. (A month and a half before we got married).

But I have now found out that his company covers domestic partners so I probably could have been covered sooner but he didn't fully check into it or ask the right questions.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

I covered my DH when he was my FH under the domestic partner policy. My company is actually really great about this.
