HELP!!

HELP!!

I'm totally stumped about what to give my parents. They're paying for the entire wedding, and they're paying the down payment on our new house. But what do you buy for people who have everything? A weekend away would make no sense, because they're always jetting off somewhere. They hate anything sentimental like Things Remembered. And they have EVERYTHING!! HELP!!!!

Re: HELP!!

Gice them a very nice thank you and grandchildren. Im sure your happiness on the day is all they really want- maybe you can get a really nice parent album done for them.

Re: HELP!!

LOL, this is one problem I wish I was having...

What about a couples spa day, or plan a night out for them... tickets to a show and a giftcard for dinner after in the city... you could even get a limo to take them... FH did this last one for his parents for their anniversary...not sure how much you're looking to spend on them

Re: HELP!!

What do they like to do? If they like to go to restaurants, buy them a certificate to their favorite one. If they like concerts, get them concert tickets to an upcoming show. Broadway shows are always a winning gift for a lot of people too.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!! I just feel like tickets to a show in exchange for a wedding and a house... i'm worried they'll be insulted.

don't worry. i'm in the same exact situation, except my parents like sentimental things. I honestly believe that all they want is for you to be happy and they probably don't expect anything in return.

Well that's why you don't just hand them the tickets. Set everything up so they don't have to do anything except GO and let the limo take them. Create the itinerary, leave your CC with the restaurant so dinner is covered, have everything taken care of and create a whole night just for them

There's no way you can do a tit for tat on a house and a wedding and that's not why they did it for you... so just make whatever you do really special, KWIM?

Re: HELP!!

I was in the same boat as you. My mom paid for our honeymoon and the reaaaalllly $$$$ celebration we had at Morton's. She's not looking for me to match what she's done with a gift and she's far from sentimental, but the little things matter to her. I don't think your parents are expecting anything elaborate from you, just be happy and be greatful. Oh, and give them grandbabies!!!

Re: HELP!!

i just went thru this with my dads bday. and i have the same issue for the wedding. for my parents, they love spending time with us kids, so for my dads bday, we gave him a day out to a baseball game with the family.
for the wedding, im giving the moms personalized handkercheifs. for dad, no idea.

Re: HELP!!

I had this same problem. I am still not 100% thrilled with my gift choice for my parents, but it was as good as I could do. They threw us a very large e-party so we got them a Waterford frame to thank them for that, so I didn't want to get them any items (we have also gotten them engraved silver trays, etc in the past - there's only so much of that someone needs). I ended up getting them a substantial gift card to Daniel, because its one of their favorite restaurants and I thought it would be nice for them to treat themselves (although - they would anyway). I was going to also get a gift card to Lincoln Center. Someone I work with told me about this and I thought it was an awesome idea. I didn't end up doing it b/c you can't use the gift cards to buy tickets online, box office only, and I know my mom would get annoyed with that. But I think its a great gift and they can be used for anything at Lincoln Center (I didn't want to get them tickets to something where they are committed to dates b/c what if they aren't free that night?). If they like ballet/opera/films etc it could be good for them. Good luck!

Also - my parents love wine - I have gotten them memberships to wine clubs before and they have always loved it. We will be in Tuscany for part of our honeymoon so I am planning on sending them a case of expensive wine as well.

Re: HELP!!

I know you said they are always taking vacations,,,but what about making reservations for them at a Bed and Breakfast type place out east? I'm in the same situation with my parents, I feel like there is nothing I can get them that they don't already have. I plan on doing a weekend at a Bed and Breakfast, I think I'm going to make reservations for them at a nice restaurant out there too. I figured after the wedding they could use a nice relaxing weekend.

Re: HELP!!

Thanks everyone for your ideas!! The bed and breakfast thing might work. Only problem is my parents are snobs and anything that lives up to their standards i can't afford.

Re: HELP!!

Instead of a weekend away, why not get them broadway show tickets, with dinner before or after the show. AND if you wanted to make a weekend plan for them just in the city. My parents did the tourist thing once and loved it. They went into the city on Saturday morning, went to a museum and the empire state building, then went to a hotel, showered changed, went to a show, then dinner at Ruth's Chris and then stayed at the hotel that night. Sunday they woke up, walked up and down 5th Ave for some shopping and came home later on Sunday.
