Hi everyone,

My health insurace runs out at the end of June and will cost $900 a month to renew. I am a graduate student and therefore can only work part-time. Does anyone know where I can get health insurance at an afforadable rate? Thank you so much!!

Check out Healthy NY. I was on that when I moved down here. It's insurance for those under a certain salary. It gave me piece of mind when I moved here.

I paid $198 per month for Healthy NY, which included prescriptions. I know it depnds on what you make.

Sometimes, depending on your circumstances, even single people can get Medicaid... not the best I know, but worth looking into....

I would either check the NYS insurance site or one of those ehealthinsurance.com type websites. I haven't looked into in years but individuals in NY used to about $400/month. Or you could go directly to the carriers like BlueCross or GHI, etc. for a quote...
Good Luck!

Most schools offer some sort of health insurance program.

My company offers a student health insurance product, their website is www.assuranthealth.com. Our health area specializes in individual health plans.

There are other companies out there that have products as well. I believe UICI (which is now HealthNet) has one.

Unfortunately, yes! For Cobra anyway.

If your income is low enough you will be able to qualify for Family Health Plus through New York State (Click here) If not then Healthy NY is the way to go

Re: Help--Student who needs health insurance!

Make sure that you get some sort of insurance before your current policy expires. If your coverage lapses, any pre-existing conditions, such as asthma, allergy treatment, etc...will not be covered under the new plan.

If you qualify, Medicaid is an EXCELLENT option - although one may feel ashamed to have Medicaid coverage, it is one of the best insurances out there if you qualify. Many people use it as a bridge for coverage when money is truly an issue. It is not easy to get, but if you qualify, it can save your A**.

Healthy NY, as others said, is also a great option.

Working in the health field, I can tell you that you should not let your insurance lapse...even if this means paying COBRA for one month until something else kicks in. It may seem like a lot, but all it takes is one illness, one emergency surgery, one cut finger, one broken bone, or one bad car accident )and your no-fault runs out and you have no secondary insurance to kick in). I had to so this too, when I graduated from undergrad school until my new job insurance kicked in....and I wound up in the hospital for a week. Twenty thousand dollars later.......Thank God I paid the COBRA!

Try to get on FH's. I don't know if you live together, but you just have to live together or sign an affidavit that you're living together and have bank accts together, and a few other qualifications to sign a domestic partner affidavit, and many companies will allow you on his insurance.

My FH's new company won;t put me on his ins, but I can stay on the COBRA from his old job, which is expensive, but it's good insurance

Best of Luck.

I used Healthy NY after I graduated from college and before I got my current job. I think I paid a little over a 100 a month for it, without drug coverage. I would definitely check into your school's insurance program as well! I feel your pain...I will be losing my insurance in January when I do my full-time student teaching and will prob need to sign up with Healthy NY again!
