Help with the curb appeal of my house

I feel like the house looks a little blah on the outside. Any ideas on how to make it look nicer?

personally I like it how it is but you could always add or do something like

* two rows of flowers on either side of the drive, or maybe those pretty solar lights (or a mix of the two)

* Maybe add anotehr colorful bush to the front.

* On the top balcony you can put some nice potted plants

* A potted plant between the garage and the front door is another idea.

* Paint the shutters/door a different color.

Thanks. There are actually flowers sprouting up on one side of the driveway. But I am not sure what they are.

What color would you paint the shutters?

Not sure, maroon or cranberry maybe? Huntergreen or slate blue might work. What style do you like? I'm not sure I'd do anything BOLD like bright red or florecent yellow but a muted colonial/historial color would look nice. Even tan is nice.

I was going to say the door and shutters too. How about black on the shutters and a bold colored door (red/hunter green/ or cobalt blue)? Also, what material is the railing on top of the garage? It looks like a metal, in which case I wouldn't necessarily do anything.....but a white vinyl fence would look great up there! I have a similar railing, and we took it down and are replacing it with a low (2 feet high) vinyl railing - it will brighten up the space.

Plus colorful flowers, as was already said.

Great house! Good luck!

I am a huge fan of black shutters on brick

I'm a huge fan of planting flowers in the flower beds infront of the windows (where you have the big bushes). You could always gut the big bushes and plant smaller ones and then plant flowers in the flower bed. I love hostas - the come back every year and are green all year long - the sprout purple flowers in the summer. Impatients are really hearty flowers for all types of sun and they grow really well all summer/fall. Marigolds and pansys are nice too

I wish there was a site that I could see how it would look with different colored shutters.

Is it too early to plant anything?

Maybe cut and paste them on to a picture of your house in photshop or something similar?

Yeah you should wait til later in the spring, especially with the crazy cold weather we've been having. A lot of people say wait til Mother's Day - but I always plant before then. I'll probably start the mid/end of April, depending on if the weather warms up by then.

I think you should remove the bushes. Some new landscaping will make it look really good.

How about a new front door with a kickplate, but without the screen door? Or you're set on having a screen door, how about a full glass one?

Black iron flower boxes under the upstairs windows?

and like someone else mentioned, you could remove the overgrown shrubs in front of the bay window and do some other plantings.

Re: Help with the curb appeal of my house

I agree with a lot of what was said...color on the door and shutters, flower boxes for the windows and something along the balcony railing, taking out the big bushes and putting in more of a garden...maybe even something like a small japanese maple in that garden in the area between the door and windows, large flower pot between the door and garage, wreath on the door too! It's so easy when it's someone else's house! heheh!

change the color of the shutters/front door. I would suggest maybe a brown or even blue. Try driving around and looking for other houses that are the same brick and see what color you like. I know I have some brick colonials near me and the brown and blue are the ones that stand out in my head. Good Luck!

yeah, dark green shutters with white trim and maybe a dark wooden door.

1. Window boxes on the second floor windows.
2. Shutters on the big window on the first floor.
3. Is the top of the garage flat? Because if it is I would put a railing across the top (to make it look like a terrace) and then paint the railing to match the shutters. You could also put some pots on the garage roof with morning glory (I think that's the plant I am thinking of) and it grows into a thin vine- it's really pretty and I bet it would look great as it grew and wrapped around the railing.
