i rarely read posts that have a title like 'anyone use' 'does anyone' 'can you' 'need help' etc, and then leave the rest of the question for the body of the post.

it would be helpful if you put some reference to what you want to know in the post title. you'll get more views, it's easier to find posts, and you'll get more responses. people always complain that they don't get enough responses, and this may be part of the problem.

so for example:

do this:
'does anyone know anything about this seller on ebay'

instead of:

'anyone know' or 'need help'

I hope i'm making sense--it's impossible to find a post just by title if it doesn't give any reference to the topic in the post!!

i'm not talking about anyone in particular and truly want to help make the boards more helpful.

good one. also i remember a thread on posting etiquette. one that sticks out in my mind is don't title a thread with ALL CAPS unless is calls for it (ie MY DRESS IS IN!! is okay, but WHERE IS THE FLOWER SHOP IN OLD BROOK LOCATED? is not okay).

I'd like to add another one -- Don't ask legal advice over the internet!

Lawyers are ethically and professionally prohibited from giving any sort of legal advice (no matter how seemingly small or benign) in these instances.... but then when no one responds or lawyers state this, we get jumped all over for being mean and selfish.

Either ask for general advice about your problem (and lawyers still probably won't respond if it's legal-related advice) or ask for recommendations for a lawyer. We're happy to give recommendations if we have them! (And no, it won't be to MY firm unless you happen to be a major corporation)

We're not trying to be mean, we're trying to be responsible lawyers. It's also just a really, REALLY bad idea to ask for legal advice on the internet. How do you know we're really lawyers, anyway?! You don't!

I havent seen this in awhile.

I try to lurk once in awhile on BHB to help 'pay it forward' for all of the advice I got when I was planning.

I'll skim the topics pretty quickly and will never bother to click on 'please help' or 'help needed'

the more specific your post title, the more hits you'll get!

just to play devils advocate....broad has its pluses too.

Writing about something specific you potentially you cut down the amount of ppl who are actually interested in your specific thing (only catches certain ppls attentions bc its something they think they know about/can answer or its something on their agenda at the moment). but general, more ppl may be curious about what you wrote about so you pull more viewers.... who can potentially then answer.

problem w/ general is...some ppl DONT check the ambiguous threads, like many have said. and then you could have missed your target audience who has great info for you!

so..i dunno!
