Hey teachers.......it's almost time...

Original post by MrsD71208

The summer is coming to an end....how do you feel about that? Oddly enough, I miss work. I mean, I LOVE staying home and hanging with my DH and puppy, but since I'm home ALL I do is clean lol I'm a clean freak and find stuff to do....I feel like I'm getting TOO comfortable just lounging around. It's time to get back into the swing of things, although I KNOW that after a month or so I'll be ready for a break LOL

I don't know if it is the same in all schools, but I'm certified to teach 7-12 (English) and my HS is a Junior/Senior HS that goes from grades 7-12. This year I'm teaching 7th grade and 10th grade.....what is your scheduele like?

Hey, is it worth becoming a teacher just to have the vacations & summer's off!! HEHE lol It sounds like a great life, but I know the 'grass is never greener on the other side.'

This is my first summer off in 5 years. I even worked on 2 of the school breaks this year. I overloaded on tutoring and any per session work I could get. Even with 2 weeks left, I feel like I haven't relaxed for a second yet!

Thats how i feel too. I did anything I could get. Then when school let out, it was full steam ahead for wedding stuff. We just got back from our HM and I am going to try to have ME time. I really could use another month.

I am dreading my new commute! I've been looking for a job in LI for about a year and found nothing! I teach in Staten Island, so my commute is over 2 hours each way! AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

omg
that toll is a killer

I commuted to the Bronx for FIVE years so I feel your pain. I found someone to carpool with and we took turns driving and paying the toll. Now I work in Queens right by the border of Nassau and I started carpooling again because the price of gas is a b!tch.

Is there anyone you can carpool with?
Hugs to you!!!

Not so far. If I worked in Queens I could at least consider taking the train!

I thought about taking the train too but I'd have to go into Jamaica and then wait for the train going back out east to Queens Village. Not worth it.

Maybe if you find someone to carpool with in Brooklyn or Queens you can at least drive over the bridge together so you can split the toll?

I do NOT want to go back! I usually work the summer and this is the first time I took off!! The money is so great when I work.. so I feel SLIGHTLY guilty.. but I am having such a great time being off!!

\
Me too! This was the first time in three years that I didn't work the summer....although the money is great, I didn't miss going in at the crack of dawn lol

Although having off is nice for both of these occasions, the amount of work that we do during the school year is MORE than 365 days worth of work! Lesson planning, grading and exam prep. is like two full-time jobs in one! The grass is really greener for those who think that teaching is great because of our time off.....we take work home daily and it just never ends. Honestly, summers and vacations aren't enough to recuperate!

People always say that but they just don't know how exhausting this job is. Teachers NEED that time off to recharge their batteries. I think I would quit without it.

There are many days I wish I was sitting in some nice air conditioned office where no one cries, pees their pants or throws up on the carpet

Although I don't have the crying and peeing, I do have the older whiners who would rather be out with friends doing things they shouldn't be doing. Reading is the LAST thing on their list when they go home.....I too would LOVE to be in an A.C'd room when it's hot out!

Recharging the batteries during the summer is good, but there aren't long enough opportunities to do this throughout the school year! It is so tiring...you are right! Us teachers are really strong! lol

Aww, I remember that feeling. Just so you know, that anxious feeling NEVER goes away. It hasn't for me or the people I teach with (some have been there for over 20 years!). I have never slept the night before the first day of school!

FH is a HS Chemistry Teacher in Nassau and without the summer to re-charge I think he would go CRAZY!! He teaches mostly 11th nd 12th graders. FH is torn...he's looking forwardin to meeting his new kids...but also dreading it.

I've considered going into teacher, ESL, Spanish or Italian...but I see what FH goes through and re-think it. It's nice to go in and work on the computer mostly, no attitudes, no whining, etc. Plus if I were to become a teacher I'd be taking a $30-$35K pay cut....which would not be fun. The upside is that FH and I would have similar schedules.

I am also certified to teach 7-12 English. I have been teaching in a junior-senior high school and I also taught 7th and 10th grade! I loved it. Unfortunately, I do not have a permanent position yet. I taught summer school this summer but I had post-5th and post-6th grade. My leave replacement continues until November or possibly until January if the teacher can stay out as long as she would like to. I will have 7th and 9th graders this year. I am excited to start my first September as a real teacher but I wish that it was my permanent job! It is going to be weird to introduce myself as their teacher and then have to explain that another teacher will be coming back. I will be so sad when I have to leave!

ETA: I forgot to add that I am an 09er crashing!

Am I the only one who feels that theycould use another month off????

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the title of this thread and my first thought was, PLEASE DON'T REMIND ME!!!!! August 28th seems too close now. I still have tons to do and haven't really had a vacation. I'm dreading that question, actually, when they ask, 'so how was your vacation?' all excitedly. Most of the teachers say they've been to Aruba, Bahamas, Europe, etc. They all come back so relaxed and recharged..... I've been running all summer, no time to rest!

I do have exciting news, that my sis just had her first baby, so I'm an aunt!!!!!!!!!!!! But rest-wise, no rest for the weary here!

Me? Hmmmm... helped FH with business for a few weeks, ran myself ragged running errands, never fixed up our new apt (we're still in boxes since April!!!!!), and I'm getting some things accomplished, but yes, I could DEFINITELY use at least another 2 months off!!!!!!!! I'd use it to hang out with my sis & my new nephew, and then finish my To-Do list that I made in June for the summer.

I have 3rd grade and I got to keep my classroom, so I'm dreading doing the bulletiin boards, arranging the desks & chairs again, putting up all the charts and posters that I just took down.......

Me!!!!!

I teach third grade and I'm actually excited to go back; I miss the kids!!! Of course it'll be a new group, but I'm really excited to meet them!

I'm on the border of Nassau, too!! I teach in Little Neck!!

I guess I should really get to Lakeshore this week and get a head start. For you HS teachers, are there any good stores to shopt at, for HS teachers who want to decorate their bulletin boards? Most stores have kid stuff that doesn't work with teenagers. TIA

It is so funny. I am in the same position. I am getting married on Sat and then I report to school the next day. This year I am jumping up to 11th Eng and I haven't really devoted any time toward prepping for it. Anyone taught Othello before?

I want to bring these novels with me on my honeymoon, but the FH doesn't want me packing my teacher edition textbooks. LOL

Tomorrow is actually my last day of teaching summer school. I teach in a 12-month private/residential school for children with developmental disabilities and we have the next 3 weeks off as our 'summer vacation'. Lol...I am so looking foward to it

I am teaching second grade for the 6th year so I am hoping for an easy year so I can just enjoy my engagement!
