Hey ladies I just got engaged on July 3rd and am looking forward to planning our wedding for October of 2010. I am sure I will get loads of info from this site. My first question is do I register before my engagement party or after?

Welcome... and Congrats...
If you think people will get stuff off the registry and give it as an engagement gift then you should register...

congrats & happy planning.
its really up to you. IMO i wouldn't, if i had an engagement party i would have preferred to receive monetary gifts to help pay for the wedding.

Now that Fortunoff's is gone, where is the best place to register?

Hi there and welcome!! This site has been very helpful for me so I´m sure you´ll find a lot of great tips. I myself am not having an engagemnt party (live overseas and it would be too difficult/expensive). I don´t know what the norm is but I think you could go either way. I have one friend who did it before bc she owned nothing and had TONS of stuff on her regitry. She said she would rather try to get gifts then $$. I had another one where she didn´t register b.c she already had a lot of stuff and just wanted $$. She figured she´d get her registered gifts at her shower.

Congrats! You can totally register before the eparty. We didn't because we would rather get money to help us and we wanted to wait a little while longer until we find a place to live but now I have the bug and I want to register soon so that when we do find a place to live we'll already have stuff lol

Welcome!
And I say register before...can't hurt. Someone bought me an engagement gift off mine already before my party!

Re: Hi I'm a newbie
I asked the same questions and Bed Bath and Beyond is the one that was most recommended. They give you cash back for things returned off your registry. also you get gifts just for registering for certain items and others if people buy them. You can check it out onlne. hopes this makes sense b.c i´m typing fast. i just realized i shoulve left 8 min ago!!! (late for work!!)
Good luck

A thought...if you register at Bed Bath and Beyond, and someone buys off your registry...you can return for $$$ back.

Re: Hi I'm a newbie
I registered right after I got engaged and therefore, before my Eparty. Our guests gave us gifts and money.
I was registered at Fortunoff, but when they closed, I went over to Macys and BBB. They had everything Fortunoff had anyway!

Re: Hi I'm a newbie
Thanks for all your well wishes. I'll probably check out Macy's. It is so hard to pick out stuff because I have been in my own apartment for 5 years and I feel like I have everything you could need. What are some of the extra things a couple should have for their new life together?

Re: Hi I'm a newbie
Congrats and welcome! Im an Oct 2010 bride too!
We registered before our eparty and we received gifts and cash. I think people like to buy vases and bowls and stuff like that for e-parties, (No one purchased any of our dishware which is more of a shower gift)
I am registered at bloomies, tiffany's crate and barrel and williams sonoma
