Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

OK, this happens to be one of my favorite book series ever. Tell me I'm not the only one who reads these books. ('Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy', 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe', 'So long and thanks for the Fish', 'Mostly Harmless', etc etc)

Felicia thinks I'm a complete nut and these books have brainwashed me, but I think Douglas Adams is a comedic genius (or was, may he rest in peace).

Anyone else like Douglas Adams and his extremely warped sense of humor? (The movie comes out next July!) Or am I really brainwashed by British humor?

DON'T PANIC!

Re: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

I've read all the books in the Hitchikers Guide series - several times. I absolutely love his sense of humor.

I don't know if the sci-fi thing is a big attraction for you, but Douglas Adams also wrote a nonfiction book about endangered/extinct animals called 'Last Chance to See'. It is the funniest nonfiction book I have ever read. If you really like him you should check it out.

Woohoo!

I could really go for a 'Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster' right now. It's like getting hit in the head with a thin slice of lemon wrapped around a very large gold brick.

Thanks, I've only read the Hitchhiker's Series (multiple times like yourself). I'd like to read some of his other work as well.

Re: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Seriously it is laugh-out-loud funny. One of my all time favorite books. It's not so much about animals as about his experiences in getting to these weird remote locations to view the animals before they go extinct...

Okay, this is a really lame description. Sorry.

I'm still unsure about the movie, though. It's either going to be great or it's going to be a severe disappointment.

I'll even buy the popcorn!

I've heard they are staying very strictly to what Douglas Adams wanted. There are changes to the story, but only items that Douglas Adams had approved before he passed away.

The teaser trailer looks great!

Re: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

i used to play the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy computer game (on DOS ) so fun. I remember it ....'you wake up with a pounding headache - what's your next move?' NO it is not get an aspirin, it is Get out of bed....i mean every action counted. It was tricky.

Too funny!!!

I usually can't stand fantasy/sci-fi stuff, but Adams just has a really unique and wonderful way with words. (ooooh, I love alliteration!)

I'm not sure how or IF this will come across on the big screen.

Re: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Some great Hitchhiker quotes:

'The knack of flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.'

'Charming man. I wish I had a daughter so I could forbid her to marry one...'

Arthur: 'You know, it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.'
Ford: 'Why, what did she tell you?'
Arthur: 'I don't know, I didn't listen.'

'Please relax,' said the voice pleasantly, like a stewardess in an airliner with only one wing and two engines, one of which is on fire, 'you are perfectly safe.'

He picked up the letter Q and hurled it into a distant privet bush where it hit a young rabbit. The rabbit hurtled off in terror and didn't stop till it was set upon and eaten by a fox which choked on one of its bones and died on the bank of a stream which subsequently washed it away.
During the following weeks Ford Prefect swallowed his pride and struck up a relationship with a girl who had been a personnel officer on Golgafrincham, and he was terribly upset when she suddenly passed away as a result of drinking water from a pool that had been polluted by the body of a dead fox. The only moral it is possible to draw from this story is that one should never throw the letter Q into a privet bush.

I tell you, Douglas Adams was a genius.

It's rather unpleasant, like being drunk

What's so unpleasant about being drunk?

You ask a glass of water!

CLASSIC!

'For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen. '

Speaking of warped sense of British humour...

this book was exactly the topic of dinner conversation at my MIL's on Sunday. They were all so excited about it and I was like ...stupid American

I read the Hitchhikers Guide years ago, and thought it was hilarious. You've all just reminded me to put those books at the top of my 'to be read' list!
