HM vaccinations... (Traci are you out there??)

Sooooooooo Traci got me hooked on South Africa as a HM. When I went to my doctor today I asked her what vaccinations I would need before travelling to South Africa.... Her answer is as follows:

MMR - Measles/Mumps/Rubella (I'm good on this one)
DPT - diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (check on this one too)

But alsoooooooooo

Hep A
Hep B
Malaria
Rabies
Typhoid

And those last two I can't even get from my doctor I have to go to a travel medicine clinic.



So my smart as FH suggested we go to the Animal Lodge at Disney and it will be just like the safari I want to go on in South Africa but I won't need 80 vaccines to do it

Yeah...when I go to Bangladesh (and hopefully India) next year, I'm going to need some of these too.

To compensate for the amount of needles I'll have to deal with, I'm getting another tattoo to commemorate the trip. But not there. I'll get it here, when I return.

Gotta love the rabies vaccine.

I asked if the rabies vaccine was for if I get bitten by a lion... I think she thought I was serious because she told me I'll have bigger issues than rabies if I get bitten by a lion.

Good call getting the tattoo here though!!!

And if I get a rabies vaccine, I am TOTALLY going to hang out with some raccoons in the park. Might as well get the most bang for my buck.

I'll bring home two. One for Jack and one for Darwin. I am sure lions incur fewer medical bills than Schnauzers.

I suppose I'm going to have to get used to this idea if I'm going to go there before I die.

I traveled to the Amazon recently and got the Yellow Fever shot, Hep B and Tyhpoid shots. They were pretty expensive since my insurance wouldn't cover tham and I also had to go to a travel clinic.

They gave me a prescription for malaria, which I didn't get filled. I used deet and clothing spray instead.

Kris- we got raccoons by me in Glendale. My BF had one in her yard last weekend. Just come back to the old neighborhood and you can hang with some.

When I went to India I needed:

MMR
Typhoid
Hep B

I didn't need Rabies as I didn't plan on being in the bush (except for the tiger safari) and no Hep A b/c I didn't plan on having s*e*x with animals.

I would double check the Rabies and the teatnus you can get if you NEED it (ie you get into an accident etc)

in all seriuosness though you should deffinettly get the Rabies vaccination. my nephew was bit by a woodchuck a couple of years ago while at my parents house Upstate, NY. he had to go for Rabies treatment afterwards & it was no fun. he had to get a series on injections over a course of a couple of months.

No problem. I figured I would ask. I think we only need the Rabies because we're staying at a place where there are animals roaming the plains She said if we were only staying in the Winelands and at the beach resorts we woudn't need it.

But I'd rather be safe than sorry and just get them.
