OMG

i would TOTALLY call them on it and send it back to them saying 'i'm sure your friends wouldn't appreciate you giving away a gift they gave you...to someone else, especially when they wrote such a nice note in it.'

i swear that is exactly what i would do---and i wish you would do it too!

I would totally do this!!

i woudl do this!

Wow...when i finished laughing I would Thank them a billion times over for 'being nice enough to give us a gift that 'Mary & John' got just for you, it means so much to us that you want us to have it...'
You are TOO good because I'd HAVE to mention it somehow...like 'Oh, what do you want us to do with the note inside?'

I would have ripped out the page with the writing on it, and sent it back with the thank you and said,

'I didn't know if you wanted to keep this part of the cookbook you gave us..you know, for sentimental reasons...'

You should send it back to them, if not now then on their 1st Anniversary. Especially if there was a very personal note. But I guess that wouldn't be fun unless you figured out a way to see their faces when they realized how busted they were!
