Homeowners !

Since we're getting personal, lol.
Including mortgage, taxes, and bills do you think budgeting $4K a month is a proper amount for owning a home? Or do you think it will be more or less?

I am stressing because I hear the people I work with b!tching about owning a house and everything, and I am learning of new $$$ that I never even factored in. I don't think we can afford paying that much money and now I am totally freaking out and am seriously considering moving to Kentucky or something.

I would say thats about right....pretty much the way it works with us, is one paycheck is for all the bills and the other is for spending and saving.

That sounds pretty good. Remember, your mortgage payments will be based on your downpayment.......larger downpayment, lower mortgage payments. Longer mortgage term, lower payments, etc.

Your monthly expenses will be the following:

Mortgage
Taxes
Water
Electric
Gas (if applicable)
Cable
Phone
Internet
Cell phone

And don't forget FOOD and GAS (for your car)!

Found this site extremely helpful when I was looking. (Substitute maint. for taxes and it should give you a good idea if you are looking at co-ops.)

Re: Homeowners !

I'm completely responsible for anything having to do with money in our house so I can help here.

Our mortgage is $2498/mo but that's because a very large down payment was made in the beginning.
We use oil heat which obviously varies but we probably spent at least $4k this past year because we got locked in a contract at a higher rate.
LIPA averages $100/mo, more in the summer, less in the winter.
Cable is $155 or so per month, including phone and internet
Sewage for us is less than $100/yr
Water is about $150/yr I think
We spend a lot on groceries because we almost always cook at home.
Gas varies.
Taxes for us are about $6k and change but it's higher for us because we have the house and then the property across the street.
Auto insurance/payments for us is also not really comparable because we have 3 cars with full coverage and I think most people have 2.

I think $4k for a budget might be just fine, it just depends on your mortgage, gas, groceries, etc.
