Homesick...

Homesick...

Well FH and I have been officially living in Florida now for 3 1/2 months and I'm starting to get homesick.

I don't know why it is hitting me all of a sudden. We have it better down here then we would in NY.

I have a teaching job, which I wouldn't have on Long Island because I never got any calls for interviews. He is making 14,000 more than he was up there. We have a great apartment...but I'm still upset.

I miss my family so much but in my heart I know this is for the better. Our future looks so much better down here. We have started looking for houses and we can afford one.

I'm sorry I'm an emotional mess right now and don't want FH to know. (He is playing playstation!)

Awwww! Maybe you're feeling homesick because you're finally getting settled into your life and some of the new-ness has worn off. I have half of my family living in California and half here in NY so I can only imagine what you're feeling. Your LIW family is always here for you!

Awww..try to cheer up. It;s ok to miss your friends and family..in fact that is very normal!
But it does sound like things are great for you guys in Florida. Just keep remembering how great it is for you there and New York is not that far..you can always come to visit.

Re: Homesick...

I am coming up to ny in November and can't wait. And then of course I will be back for the wedding the next month.

I think my problem is that I'm lonely. I was hoping to meet people at work but I'm at a weird stage. Most of the women are married w/ children. And the few younger girls are extremely religious.

I was lonely up in NY as well. I dropped a few of my friends that I had since middle school because they were just emotionally draining.

I had expectations to meet all new people down here, get a fresh start and it hasn't happened yet...and I guess I'm impatient.

Then its like my BMs don't care because none of them IM/email or call me!!!

Re: Homesick...

This sounds completely normal from both of my friends who have moved to Florida in the past year to 6 mths. One bounced around couldn't find the 'right job' after being with the same company for 14 years in NY. She felt the people were weird. She told me that one morning watching the Today Show she just started bawling thinking about the city, etc. She has now since adjusted and loves it. (Took about a year.) She has a son down there in FL and one up here in NY.
My other friend moved into a gorgeous new home with her husband and 2 daughters. Her husbands family has since moved down also, but she too feels alone. Her family is up here in NY and it kills her because she is very close with them. There's days that she loves it, weather, new big house, etc...then there are days she is so down. She's been there for almost 6 mths and still hasn't adjusted.
I guess with any major move like that it takes time. I give you credit for taking a big step. I moved 6 years ago from upstate and have been ok. I have lots of family down here and can just jump in a car and drive for 2 1/2 hours and be home if I get homesick. Unfortunately in your case you can't. Give it time. It'll get easier.

aww i am sorry to hear!
it is definitly really hard at first but in time you will get used to it. Call your family everyday if that is what you need to do to feel somewhat more connected. Go visit them and still remember why you moved out!

awww, don't be sad. one of my bm's is going thru the same thing right now. she moved to VA about 2 months ago and is lonely. i keep telling her to be patient and the homesickness will start to fade away. you should try joining a yoga class or something where you can meet people more your age. if nothing works, you always have your friends here on LIW.

it's 100% natural to go though these emotions.

like you said, you have a much better future ahead of you there.

I lived in FLA. two years ago, and went through the same thing. It goes away with time, give it a chance and focus on the great future you are going to have. Remember, you are only a 2.5 hour plane ride away.

Hey we just moved to Florida a number of months ago too - I completely understand how you feel!!! It is quite an adjustment to the lifestyle but it has been the best in the world for us overall. If you want to send me an FM, I'd love to know where in FL you are. There are tons of brides who are getting married in FL or NY who use the message boards. They have been very supportive 'off' of the computer too. We have get-togethers all the time and I travel all over the state.

When I get homesick I hug my future hubby, call my out-of-town family, plan a trip to see them, and count my blessings.

If all of that doesn't work then I do photography of the west cost of FL with my sweetie and that ALWAYS cheers me up. Here are 2 photos that I took which remind me of why FL is so awesome:

I've been in FL for 16yrs now. We moved from LI when I was 16. I still get back often to visit my grandparents, cousins,etc...It is hard even after all this time. I always feel like I'm missing out. You'll get adjusted. I'd like to tell you I love it here, but I am sick of the hurricanes and not having a change of seasons, which is why we're moving, but I think most NY'ers that move here love it.

Im not in FLA but I moved to SC a few years ago and after a certain amount of time you start to miss NY-I think everyone goes thru it. Culture shock, not being close enough to your family to stop by and friends...it ***** but it does get better!

FH and I will be moving to FL after the wedding. We have a bunch of friends that moved there and they ALL said that it took them about a year to get 100% comfortable and adjusted to living down there. I think the first year will be hell for me, but I hope I get through it. GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm sooo sorry that you are feeling homesick, but you are with your love. I am also a teacher and we plan on moving south soon so we can survive, and I know it's gonna be hard. As much as you miss everyone, try to focus on the positive, each other and how you can at least raise a family there. Have you found or started looking for jobs there? Once you settle in I am sure it will be great. Kim

Homesickness is so normal. I have been thru it so many times in the past 2 1/2 years. I have been living in and out of the country during that time.

What you need to do is find something that keeps you busy and your mind occupied. For example, i took up knitting. You will meet people, dont worry, friendships take time to develop, they dont happen overnite.
