I don't know why people gets upset really. You choose where to have your wedding and who to invite. You don't do it hoping to get your money back. Maybe it's just me, but I'll be more than happy if anyone decides to give me an envelope, but i am not waiting on it.
when i read this, the thought that popped into my head wasn't OMG will someone do this to me, it was about me going to a wedding and giving a gift, personally i just couldn't go and give $50 for 4 ppl...yeah its not about money but if i went along with 3 members of my family and i know these ppl paid a couple of hundred dollars for all of us to attend i'd feel uncomfortable...Yes they decide where to have their wedding but i dont know any places that are $50 for 4 ppl.
For my own wedding i always tell Fh dont expect to make money back and im talking about reception only. I said everyones situations are different so dont even focus on the money at all
You are right Denise, but i have to correct you on something. You can go somewhere for $50 for 4 people...THE DINER...lol (but only if you stick to burgers and chicken fingers)
lol very true but i meant reception halls for weddings.
ALSO im gonna point out the fact that most ppl thought about themselves and what they'll receive right away shows its a thought, regardless if you said you expect or dont expect certain things.
The first thing i thought about was the fact that I couldnt do that

are you sure they have money.....you really never know sometimes...
I agree....people may act like they have money and really be in financial trouble or use a lot of credit cards, etc. You just shouldnt expect things from people.....you will only be let down! Go into your wedding wanting your guests to have a good time, not to bring you gifts and money.
I agree 100% FH and I are paying for our wedding on our own and we dont care if we dont get a penny back...honest...Some people feel differently
ok this is ridiculous.
you wouldnt care if you got 1 penny back? im not tryin to be a bit ch but be realistic.. if u paid say 30grand or higher for a wedding and received nothing in return you would be fine with it?
HONESTLY YES....totally how I feel about it

you kno what.
fine..all of you who would be happy with not receiving a gift at all..no money at all...
would you ever go to a wedding empty handed or with 20$ from u and ur fh?
Absolutely not but as you can see we are all different.

Re: honestly.
I know u meant reception halls, but yeah- you probably couldnt even rent a community center and have it catered for $20 pp. haha
I think Diane's relatives just dont know the etiquette.
I agree, I know I wont make all $ back on my wedding. But, I think most ppl would expect something back obviously.

how abotu this..i understand we disagree...some of us.
so we can just end it i feel like im defending myself but i, too, am allowed to have an opinion...and i just was completely in shock and insulted for my brother..
i kno deep in my heart i still want them there..i just think that it was rude that they gave me more at an eparty...which was important but like..i didnt expect gifts
i just dont want u all to think thats what im about bc im not..TRUST ME! im not mean spirited or greedy or anything of the sort...
edit: and i too was raised the same way. i wasnt raised any different than u.
I, for one, do see both sides. Nobody is right or wrong......
Yes, you shouldn't expect ANYTHING from ANYONE..... BUT, when something like you described DOES happen, being surprised/upset/shocked is a normal reaction, IMO.
I'm glad this thread was able to not be DRAMA!! And you girls could express your different opinions w/out fighting!
i just wanted to say i have to agree with you both.i dont think you were being rude or mean Diane. You do not seem that way at all. And yes although we dont have a wedding to get $$ and make up for what we spent (which i def know wont happen in my case lol) we do know about manners and etiquette.
but also i have family members from out of state and sometimes i think it is bullcrap to say they dont know etiquette of gift giving. but that might because i see it in my family. my grandma yelled at my uncle when he only gave $100 at a wedding once because she knew the plate was $150 a person and he gave $100 for him his wife and son haha But thats my grandma for you. but my uncle did feel bad saying he really didnt realize that plates cost that much and he felt embarresed and even mailed a card to his cousin after the wedding with more $
but anyway....just imagine a Romanian wedding (FH is 100% romanian and his parents came from there). at their weddings the DJ announces each gift given to the bride and groom and who it came from- i bet some people would be embarresed!!!!

Re: honestly.
same thing happened to my FH cousin. She had this huge beautiful wedding in January and her Aunt and Uncle gave them 50 bucks! And they were PISSED! Only because we all know they have the money. They travel the world.

they dont do that anymore, it was done a looong time ago...when i used to go to baptism parties as a kid they did that. I havent seen that done in years. Which i guess explains why romanian ppl always give ALOT, i mean for our e-party we got more than you would even expect at weddings, i was shocked

Honestly, if I didn't have money for a gift, I just wouldn't go. Being invited and obligated to give a gift I might send something nice off their registry but I would feel too awkward attending a wedding where I am not financially able to give them a nice gift.

omg i feel horrible for your brother. i can't stand people like that. what person attends a wedding and doesn't even cover their plate. if you ask me its rude and if i were you i wouldn't invite then to your wedding, maybe they will get the hint that it is no longer 1920.

I understand what everyone is saying. But I thought that the whole point of a wedding is because you love the other person you are marrying and you want to share that with the world. Dont get me wrong, weddings are super expensive, but I cant count on what Im going to get as a gift to help me pay back my debt. But everyone is different.
