We planned our honeymoon at a 5 star resort in Playa Del Carmen Mexico, people keep telling me how unsafe Mexico is. My travel agent assured me this is a very safe place and yes there are parts of Mexico that are very unsafe. What should I do?

Re: Honeymoon Panic!
I wouldn't worry. We were in Playa Del Carmen a year ago. It's safe, just don't leave the resort and you'll be fine!

Re: Honeymoon Panic!
if you stay on the resort and don't venture off you'll be fine....it's the people who go 'exploring' who find the trouble

Re: Honeymoon Panic!
I've been to Mexico 2x.. Cancun and Acapulco. I went to Acapulco during the whole Swine Flu outbreak and we were just fine! Ppl also warned me both times I went of how dangerous Mexico is but I didn't let that stop me. U have to be smart, stay on your resort or only where the tourist are. If you do any excursions, make sure you are with a tour guide. Don't go off on your own, trying to be adventurous like the ppl in the movies. That is when you'll find trouble.

We were there a year ago as well. It was very safe. We left the resort every day for dinner and excursions. The town was nice with lots of restaurants and shops.

I will be going there in October. Its only unsafe if you go off where you are not suppose to on your own.

I went to Mexico last year for business and everyone was saying the same thing. I would not worry. Just don't talk to anyone trying to sell you stuff as you leave the airport, there wwill be MANY!
Do you have a private car service bringing you around? If you need a recommendation I have a few companies I've used that can help you feel more safe. FM me if your intersted.

I am booked in Mexico. Isn't every place in the world is dangerous if you don't keep your head up? I'm sure it will be fine.

I have been to Mexico 5 times...if you are content with staying at the resort the whole time, then you will be fine and have wonderful honeymoon. do not travel on your own and if you do excursions, make sure you book it through the hotel. also if you need a cab (ex: to get to the airport) make sure you do it through the hotel.

Re: Honeymoon Panic!
I wouldn't worry too much but I would not bring anything worth any value and I would research the area you are going to. It used to be only if you left the resort that it could be dangerous but unfortunately it's more recently that it's become more dangerous even at resorts. Terrorists in Mexico have been ambushing tourist resorts and holding hostages even at the high security top notch places. It's a sad, scary world we live in :(

This is very good advice! On my last trip to Mexico, which was for business, I did NOT wear my e-ring or bring any expensive jewelry or purses. my accomodations were very safe probably just like the resort you will stay at, but IMO peace of mind is worth it!

Re: Honeymoon Panic!
Crashing...
Our honeymoon was in Cabo San Lucas in October. We did whatever we wanted and never felt unsafe (and I can be quite a chicken). Certain parts of Mexico are unsafe, primarily the border towns. I can't imagine anyone is considering honeymooning in Tijuana..lol
Sadly, Acapulco has become unsafe. So much so that while we were in Cabo, we met a couple who were on a cruise. The cruise line cancelled the Acapulco port altogether.
Don't worry about Playa. You're totally fine there unless things change drastically.

I agree, my friend, who traveled there for weeks at a time to Mexico city said that it is FINE. As a female if you go alone, like anywhere you are not familiar with, keep bag tight, head up and get a trusted car service. Staying in a group is also helpful if your that concerned.
