How did FH propose?

I told my FH that I didn't want anyone else around when he decided to propose. Christmas morning, he said 'let's go to the park' (one that we go to often...down by the water). We went to the park and walked to the benches near the water. He got down on one knee and proposed. Then, he looked around and said 'OK? No one else is here'. We both laughed and then hugged.

The day before my birthday he sent me on a scavanger hunt through New York City with my two girlfriends. My first stop was to Fauchon on Park and 56th. There I had to show my ID, I got a gift certificate and my next clue, next stop was H&M on 5th ave. Got my gift cert and my next clue, FYE on 6th ave. I got the 15th Anniversary addition of Pretty Woman (one of my favorite movies) and the next clue. Next it was off to the Swarovski store in Rockefeller Plaza where I got a beautiful necklace. After that it was over to the Sharper Image in Rckfellr Plaza where I got my iPod. Up until this point I thought this was all for my birthday and then the last clue came, it was a ticket to the Top of the Rock (the observation deck at the top of the Rckfellr building with specific instructions to meet him there at 4:30. I got to the top, the sun was setting (this is in nov) and that is when he proposed!!!

FH proposed at sunrise on a snowy Saturday morning last Feb on a mountain overlooking our university. I didn't think anything of it and knew we would be celebrating V-day on that Saturday because we weren't going to see each other that V-day. When he woke me up at 6:30 to get dressed and I still thought nothing and we hiked up the mountain and it was breathetaking. We were sitting there talking and then he started recapping our entire relationship and then got on one knee. I was so shocked and surprised that I thought I was going to get sick at first but then the tears came. After that we went back down to campus where we went over to his room and he had roses for me and then on his bed anything and everything I have given him over the course of us dating. He was so romantic (which doesn't happen all the time but when it does its wonderful!)

I need to tell alittle background first (kinda long)...

FH is Austrian, and I met him when I came to Germany for school...after I graduated I moved in with FH, and had a really hard time finding a job because I didn't have a work permit. We'd talked about getting married because we knew we were going to get married some day, but we didn't want it to seem like we were just doing it so I could get my work permit, and insurance here and what not.

About a year after I graduated, I FINALLY got offered an internship at Sony Ericsson, buuut if I didn't have a work permit, they couldn't hire me. I didn't want to pass it up so I talked to FH and said we really need to get married, because I will NEVER get a job without the permit, and eventually I'd have to move back to NJ. Neither of us wanted that so we went to the 'Standesamt' (thats where you NEED to get married here...its a civil ceremony) to find out what we need and how long it would take... turns out we were able to make an 'appointment' to get married in 3 weeks!

Now for the proposal....
FH wanted 'officially' propose to me before we got married and wanted to get me a ring, even though its REALLY uncommon to get engagement rings here, he knew I wanted one. So we went out to look together and I showed him what I like and what I don't like.
One evening he went after work to go pick out my ring and he said he found one, but it won't be ready until the following week, 2 days before we were going to get married. I think that was a monday.

Fast foward to the weekend... we decided to go hiking on Sunday. I wasn't expecting anything because I thought my ring was coming in the next week. Well after about 2-3 hrs we reached this beautiful look-out point with an amazing view over the German Alps. He was like 'wow I need to find someplace this nice for when I propose to you next week' and Iwas like 'yea, good luck!' Then he asked how an American proposal is supposed to be... he said 'is it like this?' and got down on one knee and pulled the box out of his pocket! I couldn't believe it! I couldn't stop saying omg omg omg...then I finally managed to say yes of course! and gave him an huuuge hug n kiss. It was very special! Especially because FH is so NOT the romantic type. He was afraid it wouldn't work becaue when we got up there there were some more people coming, but they didn't stop thank god! We were in total private!

I knew a proposal was coming. How? I just did. We were even joking about it in an oblique way. But we had been doing that for months. (We both knew we were going to end up together.) We went to Block Island over Columbus Day weekend for a romantic getaway, stayed in a lovely B&B (The Blue Dory, I can't remcommend the B&B or the island more, we had the best time) and I expected a proposal, but it didn't come. Eventually FH said something about waiting for our anniversary, which is in December, and I was not happy. I mentioned that we had another anniversary coming up--Halloween marked one year since we had been living together. So that came, went, and FH told me that 'part of my gift hadn't arrived and he wasn't sure when it would.' Okay. Hmmmm. I didn't understand that, because I figured my 'gift' would be an expensive ring, and as such would have a tracking # if shipped. The next day, Nov 1st, I got home from work and saw a pretty wrapped package sitting on a side table as soon as I came in. (He put it there so I'd see it instantly.) I said, 'is that my gift that didn't arrive yesterday?' He said yes, and he said I could open it. So I did. Inside was a beautiful vase of a type of art pottery I collect. I took it out and admired it and forgot about a ring. Hugged him, thanked him. Then I noticed a piece of paper inside the vase. I said to my FH, 'Is that the receipt?' He just sort of shrugged with a silly expression, and I remembered, oh, proposing! so I took the paper out and unfolded it. A ring fell out, and the paper said: 'Dear Xxxxx, Would you marry me? Please check the appropriate box: __ Yes __No. PS I love you.' The 'yes' box was MUCH bigger than the 'no' box. So I went and got my good pen--I sign everything important with the Mont Blanc my best friend gave me when I graduated from undgergrad. I checked the 'yes' and then started crying. Then I remembered the ring I was clutching in my hand--it's pretty, but it was cubic zirconia. He bought me a silver 'stand in' ring so I could pick out my own. And then we were engaged!

FH took me to Lima Peru to visit his family there. There is a beautiful town near Lima called MiraFlores. MiraFlores is right along the Pacific Ocean.

When FH and a child, his grandfather used to take him to MiraFlores, and point out a particular restaurant on the water that he always wanted to take him to...but didn't have the means financially, as his family struggled at times.
FH's grandfather since passed away, but he always remembered his Grandpa's wish.

On Dec 12th, 2004, he took me, along with some family members, to the restaurant on water overlooking Miraflores...the very restaurant his Grandpa had often admired. After dinner, he took me outside on the deck of the restaurant overlooking the water...and proposed. : )

The funny element to this story I am leaving out is that MiraFlores is very, verry mountainous. Its literally all beach and then jagged cliffs. FH made me, and the family he took with him, climb down this giant cliff to get to the restaurant on the water below. Mind you, I was wearing heels and a dress. LO LOL We could of took a taxi, but he figured I should work a little for my ring!! : D

he did it when we were on a cruise and he was soooooo sea sick the entire time, but on the second night he was feeling okay for a lil while and we went to go walk around and he was going to take me on the deck to watch the sun set, but they wouldn't let people outside cus it was too windy so we sat and listened to the live music and then it was kinda ablur, but he said some really nice things and got on one knee and proposed! It was too adorable!!
